View Full Version : Fuel Economy

The other week I was going up this big hill, pretty long, sealed road 100K zone, Patrol was half filled with camping gear. I had people pulling vans, pulling away from me, something really weird happened, don't know what. Got to the top of the hill, on the flat, had no acceleration, the vehicle could hold speed, but barely increase it, foot to the floor, no acceleration.
Pulled over, car turned off. Cleaned MAF, noticed the fuel bleeder balloon was quite soft, pumped that. Started car and all was fine, since then.
However, it does seem to be using more fuel now.
What can I look at / replace / tune / adjust that may help with fuel consumption. What gauges could I set up on my el cheapo Scanguage and within the Torque engine app that could help?
With my old D40 Navara, they used to say disconnect your battery to reset your ECU so it learns your driving style again. That was supposed to help.
The truck is going great, just using a bit much fuel.
Thanks for any help.

Sounds like limp mode was the initial issue.
Anyhoooow.... I'd reclean the MAF and disconnect the Battery to force the ECU to relearn the MAF curves.
After your roadside clean the ECU might be seeing different data from the 'cleaned' MAF to the stored curves from the 'dirty' MAF

Thanks ET, I'll give that a go. I was also thinking, I reckon I'll book the bus in for a tune up at Dalton Auto in Geelong in the new year, maybe a chip as well, not sure.

Don't discount ecu remap, getting good results here with postal remap. Full NADS, 21 psi max B (Dawes/needle) at 1900 rpm (vdo gauge), Utragauge read: max 110kW(P1) / 374 N-m (T1). @ 2200 RPM gauge reads 100 kW / 315 N-m (rough onboard gauge figure) most likely @ flywhl. Kicks right in @2500 110 kW / 374 N-m. Will do Dyno in New Year (sorting 3" exhast flow issue, good result w/muffler delete)

Yeah, not sure about a remap, I like the idea of being able to just unplug stuff and you're back to where you were.

Unless you invest in a fully programmable chip which is more than a remap..
Ok so at a guess your getting air in the fuel.
Check the rubber seal on top of the fuel filter. Quite a common thing. It should be a squared lip ring not a round o ring

Chip or remap will give you about 20% more power very noticable
that is if you plan on keeping the Patrol, I have a DP chip and tow with the chip on 5
any higher and it just blows black smoke , very happy with the price and performance
around town IM getting 12/100litres and towing going up tp the murray Im getting 15/100
Next trip Ill be doing the same trip with the overdrive off and see if that improves it even move
who knows

Hi TD, good to see you again.
Thanks for the info. Did you fit your chip? They're supposed to be easy to fit. I looked at that Steinbauer and it looked simple enough.
