Hi all, I've had some help from eviltwin after dad and I bought me my first GU Patrol that I've had for less than a week and its been at mechanics for most of that time.
Found it was overheating and when we cracked the sump to replace oil first thing that came out was bright green coolant, not happy. Then on eviltwin's advice dad took it for a radiator pressure test and came back with exhaust gases getting into cooling system, head gasket.
Took it to the mechanic and after his inspection he suggested two options.
1. Put a new head on it $6k
2. New reconditioned motor that has had plenty of work $7.5K
Reason for his suggestions is that 1. the coolant in oil, 2. evidence of coolant in oil on oil cap and 3. said he can smell coolant being burnt through exhaust.
Most of the week I've been pissed off that we seem to have been ripped off and that as private buyers there's not much that can be doneBang HeadBang Head
So mechanic is reluctant to put new head on an old motor when hes unsure of what bottom end is like. Hes recommendation is new motor thats coming from a wreckers with receipts saying its had $9k work done on motor. A wrecker he uses all the time (Central Cost 4X4 wreckers).
Think the only option is to put new motor in??? We trust mechanic because hes been working on our family's cars for years.
