Have been given a K&N Air Filter as a present.
To Fit or NOT to Fit is the Question??
Is anyone running one of these?? I have heard that the 3L is particular about its air flow.

The 3L DI motor is sensitive to airflow but I don't think fitting the new filter will change the airflow enough to cause issues.
You do need to watch how much oil is in the filter, if it has been over oiled the excess oil can contaminate the airflow sensor.
My personal opinion is if I was going to use a K&N or similar filter in a 4WD I would only ever use it for on road use. Off road I would switch back to the standard paper filter. I just don't trust the performance filters for off road use.

I just put one in my TB42e and happy as - that's said, it was sucking in some crap as the old one was a bit Swiss cheese!! LOL. So far, so good ...

Like the idea of swapping back to the paper filters for offroad use as i had a similar concern. Would still like to hear the opions of others to find a bit of consensus. Thanks for your quick replies.

I have a K&N in mine and have done for over a year. and had no problems. and I go offroad. I accually had this discussion at work today. the bloke was saying that his mates used them and the sucked in excess oil through the motor. That is caused by human error. when you oil a K&N you are supposed to leave it out for the oil to penetrate the filter material. the excess will drain off and you remove that with a rag. The biggest drawback with a washable filter is that it is a day job to change, by the time it dries after washing and waiting for oil to penetrate

Definately stick with the genuine paper filter.

I have tried the k&n filters and they don't filter as well as a paper one.. They will let more air though and maybe help a bit with performance, but start driving in dust and I found the air flow sensor and intake pipes to the turbo had dust in them (and that filter was barley 3weeks old)..
On road k&n is good, off road I would use paper filter... Personally I run a genuine Nissan filter all the time and change it every 5000km when the troll gets a service

Have fitted the K&N but will be swapping it out for serious offroad. Thanks to everyone for their advise. Will try to post back to let everyone know how it goes.

I just put a K&N in Thelma without reading this thread first. What say you now after six months use???

Just don't over oil it, or you will end up with your MAF sensor coated in oil, and then you run the risk of the sensor giving incorrect readings ....... it could then even help it go Kaboom!!
I won't use one, as it is hard to quantify when it is over or under oiled.

its not that hard at all. if you let it sit as per the instructions, if sections of the element are a lighter colour its under oiled. The excess oil will drain off.

I am happy with the balance of information provided on this thread. Have already had a head ache with Thelmas MAF sensor so I have no desire to go down that path again so will be applying the 'less is more' phylosophy when servicing the filter and if not happy, will put an original back in until the K&N is adequately drained and the same colour all over. Will also keep the original handy J.I.C. Thanks Ben.

Thanks Ben-e-boy.... I should have quantified that I use one on my motorbike and I am happy to use it for that purpose, and even know how to oil it too.
It is hard to know who you are talking too at the other end of the internet, so sometimes it is best to give the information that the majority seem to think is the best solution. I have heard ( not seen ) of quite a few oil coated MAF's and their particular owners with problems...

I have just put one one of these filters in my 08crd and now i have just found this thread which has me a little concerned about the MAF. I already knew about the filter letting in more dust but
I was just going to carry a genuine nissan filter with me and change it over when we hit the dirt.
Has anyone got any more info since the last post in 2012???

I've had one in mine since the exhaust went on. (Basically from new) and haven't had a problem with it. (YET LOL)
I do have two filter, one spare and just change and clean and re-oil after dusty trips.

Got one in my Di. No issues. And you wont see issues unless you over oil it. I use the spray on oil and that makes it very easy to apply and NOT over oil it.

The trick is to not wash them too regularly. I've heard from several mechanics that for any air filter to be effective, require a certain amount of usage(ie dust and crap) to block the large openings in the filter.
The trick to high mileage engines is regular oil changes and not so regular air filter changes as dust does cause considerable wear to the engines internals.

no not a fan I feel why put something in my motor that may hurt it and theres plenty of info here to suggest that it could happen.

Yes k&n sell it. I use it and it comes out a pink'ish colour. Makes it easier to see where you have sprayed.
Just dont bother with their cleaner. Its just overpriced Chemtech degreaser in a tiny bottle

I run K&N on my 4.2TD and have for several years they work fine and as long as you keep them clean
