Im in the planning stage of a Desert trip and was thinking as to what I need to take in the way of spares, I would be carrying the usual things belts hoses fluids etc. So my question is has anybody been and done a desert crossing and had an issue where they wished they had remembered a certain part and are now carrying it on all the trips that they go on since. Or even something that would of made things easier mechanically like a special tool or the likes.

Yep an impact screwdriver/socket was my wish and couldn't buy one either .

Oh yeah, all the time. Battery powered power tools like impact drivers, angle grinders can come really handy.
Recovery gear to pull the vehicle out is the most important in desert trekking.

Haven't travelled in the desert, yet, but I have needed a front panhard rod mounting nut when it came off in the middle of nowhere. So now I try and carry a range of the correct threaded nuts, washers and bolts. I was lucky the chassis mount bolt was the same size. I used tape and tie wire (which are priceless to have too) to hold the bolt in when I used the nut on the axle mount. Also recommend carrying a hammer which is way heavier than your average claw hammer.

You can't carry everything - so - just take the bare basics - travel with others - make sure you are in RACV total care (or the equivalent of what ever state you live in).

all of the above....and if ya parinoid mkaybe a sta phone for emergencies....but enough food water and good communication will see ya oput the other side

...................... besides - unless you are stupid enough to go into desert areas (such as the Simpson) in summer - the biggest issue you will have is not running into another vehicle coming the other way! There are very few places in Oz that I would call really remote. In normal times there is always someone about if you just stay with the vehicle and wait. Yep - carry a sat phone if you are really worried - and also check the eight UHF repeater stations. Many properties and small communities use a repeater station for local communication.

I appreciate all the ideas mentioned but is there something that you never thought you would need but has become one of the first things you check for in your kit before a big trip

Having said all that - I always carry a spare fan belt and belt tensioner, a boost sensor and a MAF sensor. After travelling many K's in my ZD 30 (often accompanied by other ZD 30 Patrols), I have found that these parts are prone to failure and not always easy to come by in outback areas. I also carry a basic tool roll. Anything more serious than that and it's RACV to the rescue.

Tyre repair kit...cheap easy and fits under front seat....only wished i had it once....never again,we went out and bought one

Tube of metal repair putty , tube of the plastic version , thread tape , a few assorted hose clamps , tube of sealent and a ratchet strap are always in my kit .
