Hey Guys,
I am wondering whether the VL Commodore or Skyline AC compressor can be fitted to an RB30 Patrol!!!
If not a straight swap over, is it possible to adapt a Skyline or VL AC compressor for an RB30 Patrol?
Has anybody done any work towards a swap over like that??!!

Surely it should be a straight bolt in?? you'd think the GMH part would have Nissan written on it even? Although Ford retro fitted AC to some of the Mavericks so GMH probably did too but the bracketing will be available i'd think.

Dunno. I have taken the taken the belt off, the tension pulley and the fuse out. Gotta wait for funds to either convert to an electrical compressor or a just an after-market unit. It will be a long wait...

Electrical compressor?! I didn't that can be useful option!!! I would've thought it would draw bit too much out of the battery or the alternator.
Alternator upgrade to a good 120 amp one should be on the menu for an electrical compressor to work I reckon.
Direct belt driven one is more energy efficient I would imagine.
Mudnut, since you're in the market for a replacement for your AC compressor, I think you're in a better place to find out whether a Skyline or VL one can be adapted to your Patrol. I think you can with some bracketing as MudRunner suggested above.
See if you can get hold of a one(a dud one would do) and whether it matches the plumbing and fitting. Plumbing won't be a big deal, 'cos you can always employ adaptors to match.

I have had a bit of a look around but I may have to go with mechanical. My thought was to run a unit that was impervious to mud and dust.

I'm thinking it may be not a straight bolt in 'cos even among the same model of RB30 Patrols the AC pump can be slightly different(so I've heard, dunno about the accuracy of it). But, I reckon with some fiddling with brackets etc, it should be able to kinda retrofit.

BTW, the premise of my question basically came from the belief that my AC compressor may be kaput or partially kaput.
I can't justify any big money for a compressor even if I had the money in my wallet.
They are asking for an arm and half a leg for a new one.
It's not my style to give up my limbs for an AC compressor. ;)

The typical mechanical one IS impervious to mud and dust. The mud and dust can only get into the clutch assembly, which usually get cleaned when you spray water into the engine bay to wash it.

The seal failed very quickly. One day the sight glass was showing a perfect system, the next, there was oil leaking and the pump developed a squeal. I can only think some sort of foreign material penetrated it and caused it to fail. I used to run it every week or so to keep the oil where it was needed.

Hmmmm....that doesn't sound good.
I've been thinking leaking oil from an auto AC pump meant leaking refrigerant as well.

Yeah, and I also meant the leaking oil and refrigerant into the atmosphere ideally should keep any crud getting into the plumbing and mechanics inside the AC pump, until the all the refrigerant is leaked out and the pressure is equalized inside the pump and outside of it.
I'm thinking of getting an AC pump from a Skyline or VL and start playing with it to see if it fits.

Exackery....
What I suggest you can do is to remove the AC compressor and take it to a wrecker and match with the Skyline or VL compressors they have.
Don't give them too much information as they are more than happy to jack up the price to 'help' you.
If the two compressors look identical or can be modified with minimum work, then you should be on the business.
Since your AC compressor is already kaput, you've got nothing to lose by removing it.
You just have to make sure not to leave any open plumbing to atmosphere by sealing them properly(in the vehicle of course).

They all are grossly overpriced I would say, 'cos most of the other ones for Toyota, etc cost only a fraction of that price.
