Hello. my 2003 GU Patrol has started leaking greasy oil inside both of the front tyres. The right side is actually dripping and running down onto the ground, and I can see where it's been spraying all up around the tyre from driving. The left side isn't as bad. My question is, how urgent is the need to get it fixed? I understand I need to keep an eye on my diff oil levels, but I've been told not to drive it by one person as the oil could get into the brakes because the leak is quite bad. Another person says it's ok to drive just get it fixed asap. and then there's the person that says it's all good just do it when you can afford it.

Are we talking weeks or days? Is long distance driving ok? Feeling frustrated 🙄

Thankyou!

Hard to know without seeing it, but I have seen some Patrols driving around for ages with leaking axle seals, and all is OK, and who knows - you may have been driving around for a year with it like that already, just not knowing it.

Just from a logical point of view, I would definitely be thinking that longer trips could be put off till the seals are repaired, but drive around town to do what you need to do with a plan in place to get the bits and pieces required or get it looked at by someone that can fix it as soon as you can either afford it or afford time to do it.

From an environmental point of view, there is nothing worse than oil being dropped all over the place, as it could end up being a hazard not only to you, but to others too.

Thanks. All I know is I've never had a drop of oil in my driveway, but as of 2 days ago, there is a small puddle.

dripping to the ground is not great and is probably the catalyst for getting it done sooner rather than later. You would not do one without the other though and id be inclined to do a full swivel Hub rebuild and bearing while your there. Dripping not eh ground is a danger to other road users also as slippery roads brings bikes down.

Thanks. I've ordered a kit online.. next step, finding a mechanic to do it for me at a reasonable price. 😑
