Ok so today I was driving home when all of a sudden lights lit up on the dash... the handbrake light, battery, Sub tank and some canister looking thing on the right...
I then started to watch my temperature gauge start rising... I realise that I need to stop...

I pull over as soon as I can and open the bonnet to find my fan belt absolutely shredded to pieces.

Thinking it's only the fan belt I get my brother to pick me one up and come to my rescue (I would have walked somewhere but I had the three young kids with me)

He brings it over and a Good Samaritan pulls over to help as well. He gets under the car to help my brother get it around all the pulleys and then I hear: "oh shit that's not good"

Ok so something has been sheared/snapped off. My question is... what the hell is the thing I need to replace called? I'm told it's some sort of bracket... but I figure I would need to know it's name to source one...
also, why would this have happened? I had the car in for a new belt 2 weeks ago...

I have attached some pics so you know what I am talking about [emoji23]

Hey mate. What motor?
Hard to tell, but to me it looks like the alternator idler pulley sheared off, which was either the initial cause, or collateral damage.
Once again thats just my quick observation judging by the photo.

That break is clean so to me it suggests it was collateral damage , as to why the belt came off after two weeks is a mystery that needs looking into .
Did the mechanic stuff up or is something out of alignment .

Looks like the mechanic stuffed it up. You might need lot of luck chasing a mechanic for any negligence, if that's the case.
A mechanic should be able to notice many other pending issues related to the fan belt while fitting the new one.
Stuffing it up by negligence is a different sort of animal. Either way, it's a good thing no damage to the engine.
Taking it back to the mechanic who did the job is the way to go, for starters.
