G'day,
I have a 1998 Patrol which we bought in Cairns two years ago to tow our off road camper trailer. My family and I are now living on the south east coast of NSW. The Patrol has been awesome until a few weeks ago. I'm hoping to get some advice so that I can make some educated decisions.
If anybody can help, I would really appreciate it.
The Patrol started to blow white smoke on start up and was running really rough. I took it to the local 4x4 mechanic and he re conditioned the injectors and replaced some of the glow plugs. The problem was not fixed .
I was also told that the engine has hydraulic lifters. How can this be possible when the GU has mechanical lifters? I've checked the manufacturers plate under the bonnet which shows the date 05/98. Did any of the early GU's come out with hydraulic valve lifters? I have been unable to find the engine number to ensure that it is the original engine. Does anybody know where in the engine bay I can find it?
Any advice greatly appreciated. It would be awesome to avoid replacing the engine $$$$.
Cheers,
Caroline

Welcome to the forum , sounds like your having a few problems , from what I'm told white smoke can be unburnt diesel on start up and or water .
Replacing glow plugs did zip for mine but two weren't working , I'm suspecting a slight leak in the head gasket for mine but I live where it gets bloody cold and that doesn't help on cold mornings.
Is it using water at all if yes there's your problem if no it's something else maybe one of our fellow forum members more experienced might be able to shed more light on it .

No water worries. I think we're in for a new engine. It's not looking very promising! Thanks for your message, good luck with yours!

G'day. The mechanic did a compression test and the results were low across all cylinders. Just trying to work out if we recondition the head, replace the engine, or scrap her. Tough call!!
