Hi there

I have a 2010 Patrol wagon, petrol gas with 85000 kms and in the customer information handbook it says the transmission oil should be changed every 80000 except for transmissions 6AT and 7AT. Now I have no idea what transmission I have except that originally there was no transmission oil dipstick, but I added one after reading it was a good idea.

I have just bought a 2.6 ton caravan and intend to tow it 4000 km to Northern NSW and then back to Victoria, so am getting my vehicle serviced.

Should the transmission oil be changed, either in accordance with manufacturer recommendation or simply becuase it would be a good idea and no oil will last for ever? What type of oil would be a good choice. I was just quoted $480 to replace with fully synthetic oil, that sounds like a expensive exercise

Thanks for any suggestions

Cheers

Kevin

Nissan can do a test on it to see if it needs replacing.

As westy says flush it so it gets the old crap out the convertor and put a cooler on bypassing the factory radiator cooler. The re5r05a dont like heat.
$480 does sound a bit steep though if your not going to do it yourself. Have a ring about.

The oil should be good for about 100k at least.
Nissan did originally recommend they were sealed for life (pffffttt) hence no dipstick.

I have a better price and more local, general mechanical repairs, not an auto specialist. He is recommending penrite fully synthetic oil, and new filter kit, but is happy to use whatever oil I want. any recommendations?
Any suggestions on an aftermarket transmission cooler, brand, size etc?

Thanks for your replies

I have the penrite full synthetic in mine and have had no probs. It complies to Nissan matic j standards. I noticed less flaring and smoother changes.

PWR sell a kit as do davies craig. Both are well made so depending on what price you get them for.
Something like the PWR HD oil cooler would do well
280x255x19mm or

Which is a similar size. A little bigger than these would be ok also.
If your towing 2.4t alot check out wholesale automatics nomad valve body upgrade. Its not a cheap mod but will help shifting and strengthen the tranny up by bumping up line pressures etc. Money well spent.

Booked in for wholesale automatics for auto flush, filter full synethic oil plus adding a transmission oil cooler. They suggested not to bypass radiator oil cooler and said the Patrol radiators area a reliable product.

Thanks for the advice
