Morning, My Gu turbo has started leaking around the flanges. I have 260 000 Klm up now . Is is a straight forward job to take off and repair.
Do you have any idea what would be involved, gaskets etc or is there "O" rings and seals that should be replaced by a Diesel Mechanic.
Cheers
Brush.

mmm first take a look at the inlet pipe is there oil in it ? I t might be a breathing a bit heavy .
the oil gets separated in the turbo and leaks out .
The other problem to look for is a blocked oil return line it goes back to the sump .
other than that its a trip to a Turbo specialist to have a look at . the carterage can be rebuilt carbon seal . but its sometimes cheaper to have a new carterage fitted
it not a job that can be done with ease . you can bend the shaft just trying to in do it . new seals rebalance bearings its all specialised tools . if set up properly seam to go forever my old Rodeo has 700,000 after a turbo rebuild when it was new still going well .
Like most things its finding the right people to do it properly . I used to make the tools to do turbo repairs . hope this helps

Can you post some pics. I would not spend a cent on that turbo if it's at end of life. There is a long list of better. EVERYTHING is better.

Post some pics and let's see what your looking at.

If it is factory intercooled it is likely just a build up of oil from the crankcase breather after 260k km. Clean all your piping and intercooler and fit a catch can and monitor.

Thanks for the reply's, I spoke to a DM yesterday as I was not sure of having a go myself. It is the factory setup, he said there were no obvious faults and he would clean it out and renew the metal gaskets.
We have had this GU for 11 years ,2nd owner it had 167000 on the clock when we got it, they were all hot Klms, cattle buyers vehicle .
Oil and Filters at 5 and 10000, only replaced Alternator at 130. Clutch at 248. A lot of life left in it yet.

Hi mate,

i was on my phone the other day but suspected the same as what NissanNewby (NN) stated that it was likely just Crank Case cases that are venting back into your intake. As recommended by NN i would just clean the area and fit a catch can. i.e.. Spray the area with degreaser from supercheap and pressure wash at the car wash then either fit a catch can or at least disconnect the intake vent. (This is the hose that comes out of the round thing at the far end of the rocker cover and the hose goes back into the air intake after the airbag and before the turbo. This sends Oil vapour into the intake of the turbo and would be caught in a catch can. For you it is going into th turbo and now leaking out all over the place. Clean and bypass.

As i said, leave the Turbo alone. If your Turbo is at End of Life i seriously would come back to these pages and talk about your options as spending Any money on the HT18 Factory Turbo is Madness when is it a Slug and there are sooo many better options for you.

Also, i have a GUIV with 285k on the TD42Ti. i have owned the car since 98k and always done my own services and Oil / filter changes at 5k to 10k. I still have the original Clutch at 285k, No other major failures. I fitted a New Turbo at 275k with nothing wrong with the HT18 bar performance. In the last 10k running a new Turbo i have never regretted upgrading the Turbo. Its set up for Touring and Towing and it is a Beast. Transformed. I would not spend a cent on the HT18, its better spent towards a better turbo.

Sorry to slightly hijack your thread Brush...

My work car GQ Safari turbo is doing exactly the same as above but the breather is not hooked up to intake so would one assume the seal is gone?

Are you sure it doesnt go back into the airbox? Where does it go if it doesnt go there?

Safari turbo kit should have it going back into the airbox it may not be as obvious as some and Andy may have to look a little harder :p

It was leaking when we bought the car and drove it for a few months before getting Rwc. Yeah it was venting to atmosphere.

It had to be plumbed up properly for the rwc a couple of months ago and is still leaking of course and I haven't taken it off yet.

Yes. The best we have ever got one for from an oz supplier is $1950. Unless the aud gets a bit stronger it may come down slightly.

As much as I'd love to it doesnt need it.

I must say though, The safari turbo is a good all rounder for around town and fun trips, absolutely nothing wrong with it apart from dropping oil everywhere.

My warehouse manager has laid a sheet of plywood in my car spot at work...lol

Have you checked the simple things like oil supply and drain in condition and tight.

Yep oil feed is all dry.

There's oil everywhere on the compressor mainly on the front side (inlet side).

I need to give it a good clean and check it properly.

Thanks Guys, DM fixed leak today, Put flange seal, Body seal and new hose, suggested a catch can as there is some by-pass but I don't do many k's now so I will address that later on. Cost $145.00 1 1/2 hrs with hose and Gaskets.

Thanks, I might need to do that too.

Was that price with them removing and re fitting turbo as well or were they able to do this with turbo in vehicle surely.
