Hi people
Have a 97 GQ wagon - TD4.2 after market turbo - 50mm lift, recently retired and am still deciding if I want to create the 4by I really want.
new cars are nice but toooo many electrics for my simple brain, so my idea is to build a 4by that I want - needs to tow 3.5T - be automatic - diesel of course so i was thinking of a GU with blown 3.0 donk and change to 4.2TD then go with auto conversion ... waddya reckon??

Welcome grumpy , 3.5 tonne you might find a bit hard with a GQ because that's one tonne over allowable limit , mine is stamped that way and is a factory auto .
You either have to go and find someone to upgrade your suspension and get it engineered and spend a few dollars on engine and gearbox mods .
I agree with you that the modern 4bys are crap , when we sell up and start travelling instead of buying something new for a tug I'm going to send the 3 litre hand grenade GU in to one of the engine conversion joints and get a Duramax donk with Allison auto .
Cost is just under $50k but you end up with something that won't notice the caravan is on that much .
People have done amazing things to the 4.2td motors for good gains in horsepower but to get great pulling power will cost $$$$$ .
Hoping some other more experienced forum members can add to this post of yours .

Our 2002 GU is rated at 3 tonne so yeah better way to go , they do make upgrades for the auto tranny for towing and plenty of 4.2 GU's out there pulling big vans .
