View Full Version : eBay intercoolers

Bit of a general question re Chinese special EBay intercoolers.
Looks like my front mount IC has finally carked it and I'm not welding it back up again.
I haven't measured anything properly yet but maybe the usual 600x300 size with 3" or 2.5" inlet outlets.
Just checking what eBay sellers or eBay intercoolers members have bought and their thoughts on quality, etc.
Don't want cheap and nasty just a good medium range...
Looking at spending $200-400 ish then just get a universal pipe kit.
Has anyone used those Aeroflows?

I bought this one a few years back. It's 450 x 300 x 76 with 2.5" in/out. Bar & plate.
Paid $159 for it with postage. Done about 10k kms and no issues.
IMO, it appears to be well made. The welds look pretty good.
The end tanks are cast and are pretty thick so they soak a lot of heat.

Aeroflow are fine. From a little more extensive testing we have been doing with the borg warner you could go to a 63mm (2.5") wide core. Even slightly smaller say 500x200. Anything around the $150-200 mark will be more than good enough quality wise. Then just run 2.5" hot side plumbing and 3" cold side plumbing.

Thanks matty, yeah this custom wrx intercooler is ridiculously thick so a 2.5" wide core would be a lot easier.

This is what oldmav ia using in his latest creation with no performance losses running just over 200rwkw and 700+nm of torque. He is also got his 0-100km/h time down to 7.6sec

I'm pleased to see it's confirmed that you don't really need to spend $2k+ on an intercooler.. :)

Yes you can. It requires a little more effort but still not a lot and the outcomes is as good or better. The cooler setup old mav uses on the setup I mentioned set him back about $300

Would be interesting to see how they flow tune on the inside, but this statement is a bit of a concern to me -
Please note you will need to machine 2x extra ports as it will not line up with the standard pattern.

Yeah I thought that was a bit odd too but they are bloody cheap and an error in the cast mould might be the reason why.

No. That looks like its for a TB42 and bolts to the top of its intake manifold. It doesnt really address the area that needs attention when looking at manifold improvements.

Hey mate do you know what bar OldMav has on that car?
I can't measure properly until I take the grille off but I think I remember 300mm high IC was literally touching the ARB deluxe bar angle braces and was pushed up max just under the bonnet latch mechanism.
I'm not 100% but just remember something about 300 being crazy tight!

Welcome to throw a tape measure over the golden horse while the grille is off if that helps. . .

Your bars not on though is it?
Those bloody angled supports come up on a decent angle and you lose a lot of space on the front that's all.

Can quickly throw the bar on for reference if you want . . .

Standard nissan. Thats on a gu though.
Go back to post 4. The borg warner is insanely efficient so you can use something slightly smaller. I wouldnt go any thinner than 2.5" so you can keep that as your minimum pipe size but you could certainly go shallower to a 250 or 200 tall cooler. Basically use the biggest you can fit in their thats no thinner than 63mm

Thanks mate, might take you up on that, will your offset bar and your body lift match my spacing or will it give it me a false sense of security lol

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkThe body lift should be fine but spacing may be a little different, just have to do a bit of measuring I reckon.
Interesting enough was looking at bars @ patrolapart and guy was saying that ARB & TJM bars are really similar. Apparently ARB ones fit on the outside of the chassis and TJM go inside the rail, so if that's the case my old one is a TJM and the new one an ARB. . . Kinda like the fitting inside the rail better. .

Nah all good thanks Rossco.
I forgot the issue I had with mine being it was a crazy 900mm long x 85mm thick x 240mm high.
This one sits too wide and goes past each bar support so a 300mm high would not work along with the inlet/outlets on angles.
The one OldMav and most people use being 600x300 with straight outlets inlets works perfect and sits in between the bar supports.
It actually fits pretty snug!
