Seems my run of bad luck is continuing. The fourth problem in the last month or so is now car related. I'm getting a nasty grinding noise from the turbo area on my ZD30. Seems to quieten down when it warms up a bit but doesn't go away. Boost seems pretty normal (according to the Torque gauge) but not sure how accurate it is. Power is pretty crappy. Anyone know where I can get it looked at around the Penrith area and how much a replacement would be?
TIA.

Check the intake for oil

G'day mate. How exactly is the noise grindy? Is it louder under boost / load ?
Just curious whether it could be the cracked EGR pipe behind the motor near the snail. My noise was first diagnosed as a turbo. It almost sounded like it was spooling up with a heap of sand inside it. But in fact it was the harsh air gushing out of the split EGR pipe.
Thought i'd mention it as it's an easy check and a cheap one to tick of the list.

As above and check your intercooler and piping too. Our old zd30 had a similar grinding sound on start up but would quiet down after a minute or so.
Ended up being a crack in the IC, crack closes up a bit when engine heated up and was hard to diagnose.
Noticed oil residue on side of the intercooler.

Seems it's an exhaust manifold leak....

It makes sense. It's louder when cold, but gets quieter as metal warms up, expands, closing the gap... Exactly like the EGR pipe on my CRD.
