Do you have the service history on it & of so it would be worth posting up what was done on its last 3 or 4 services.

Sounds like you have a good motor then.
First thing to do, regardless of what you've been told by the previous owner.. Dump the cam belt, fit a new genuine one along with new tensioner and idler and loctite the crank bolt.
Nizzbits is the man to supply these genuine parts. No I have no connection with Nizzbits, just had great service and prices.
Rod.

Why would we need to do that and how much would something like that cost?

basically the 2.8 is not a very reliable motor, it needs very regular servicing and by changing the cam belt and tensioner etc you have a better chance of it lasting longer. these things were pretty good at detonating at around 200k. someone here should be able to fill you in on what goes wrong with them and give you a hit sheet of what to watch out for.

Well, if the cam belt, idler or the tensioner fail, you will be up for a brand new motor, you get no warning, it just stops dead and you start digging deep into your pocket.
Also, how do you know the crank bolt was loctited when the belt was done, if it was done at all ?.
Unless you know for absolute certainty it WAS done, then I suggest you change it, bit like insurance really. About $400 plus labour, not difficult to do yourself.
