09/01/2012 - 97.1kg. Time to start walking again. Doh
23/01/2012 - 97.1kg
What I'm about to say is my journey .....................................
In consultation with my doctor, dietician, diabetes educator, Registered Nurse, podiatrist and opthomologist, (My Care Plan Team), we worked out my program/testing and a lot of blood (BSL testing) sweat (exercise) and tears (shock/horror and sheer determination), I was able to beat Type 2 diabetes in 76 days.
My BSL is around 5.8-6 - now.
I am in remission from a chronic disease (Type 2 diabetes) through diet and exercise. My weight hovers between about 96-97kg. Not as low as I'd like, but I'm more than happy with my achievement (lost about 18-20kg in 6 months).
I credit much of my success to the wife for religiously cooking from the book 'the CSIRO and BAKER IDI Diabetes Diet and Lifestyle Plan'. I've backed off a bit now, but those initial 6 months were critical to my success.
My journey has been no walk in the park, nor smelling the roses along the way. I've had a few chats from doctors about 'pulling my finger out' and doing something about my weight, but I knew this time I HAD to LISTEN. I've halved my BP tablets and completely off diabetic medication. I'm allowed 2 standard alcoholic drinks a day, but my problem is I can't stop at one or two, so I choose not to drink at all.
To quote from the book 'the CSIRO and BAKER IDI Diabetes Diet and Lifestyle Plan'.... 'Each day in Australia, 275 people develop type 2 diabetes'
When I read this, it absolutely floored me!!!
I'd strongly recommend everybody consider seeing their doctor for a full, yearly medical check up - starting right now - not tomorrow or next week or next month - especially BEFORE you start any exercise or weight loss. Some procedures may be/are invasive, but what price are you willing to pay for a bit of TEMPORARY discomfort? Hopefully not your life.
The end.
Take care out there.

Soooooo, if you wanna 'give it another go', or 'give it a go', feel free to add your weight.
Participants normally weigh in every Monday morning.
I strongly suggest that before commencing, you visit your doctor/health care professional for the appropriate tests before undertaking any exercise and/or weight loss/reduction program/strategy.
Unfortunately, I'm going on 3 weeks holiday, starting this Monday, so I'll be weighing in this Saturday. lol
Looking at my last result, I've put on about 6kg! Not happy, and I can feel every gram. lol.
Take care and looking for some participant motivators to help me.
My goal is 90kg and I'm about 106 - give or take the morning constitution and 2 cups of coffee. lol.

This thread is such a good idea!! I would have been on board a while ago but reached my goals finally :)
but here are some healthy versions of normal foods that helped me - I didn't cut too much out, just tried to make it healthier instead
- spag bol: cut out the pasta and had the bolognaise sauce on broccoli instead. Pasta doesn't have much flavour anyway, it's just a vehicle for the sauce I figured :) and spag bol sauce is pretty healthy if made with lean mince beef
- snacks: replace creamy dips with things like hommus, tzatziki, guacamole. And instead of crackers, have carrot/celery sticks.
- always had healthy snacks that can't go off (mixed nuts, protein bars) everywhere: on my desk at work, in my car, in my bag etc. so that whenever I got hungry (often haha), no excuse to duck into maccers etc
- drinks: instead of normal soft drinks had the diet version, had tea instead of coffees, totally still drank haha or the diet would be unsustainable ... but went for low carb beer/cider (e.g. Strongbow Clear, or Pure Blonde) or wine - less carbs than normal beer or like jack/coke cans
Anyway, just some things that helped me .. I still do a lot of them because it kind of became habit, and then I can eat other unhealthy stuff e.g. if out for dinner, and hope it will balance out :)

I’m not in this, but have a bit to add, which may or may not be of interest to some.
Folks who know me may be slightly amused by someone of my physical stature thinking about dieting to lose weight.
I have never had to worry about my weight or what I eat, & have averaged a mere 55kg or 56 kg for all of my adult life. (I am now 57 y.o)
However in the past 7 months since I left the farm my activity levels have been far reduced & for the first time ever in my life I have developed a belly & ‘spare tyre’ around my middle which seems to be spreading upwards. The new pants I got 6 months ago (because the old ones no longer fitted) no longer fit, & I’ve had to get a bigger size again. I now have the choice of wearing my pants as I always have with a noticeable ‘veranda’ hanging out the front, or pulling them up over my waist ‘grandad style’. (Not a good look). I finally understand why many old men often prefer braces to belts!
Since March my weight has risen to 69kg & it shows.
I wrote what follows last weekend.
So two weeks (13 days actually but who’s counting) ago I weighed in at the 69.3kg with a waist measurement of 94cms. At this stage I had decided I would start on a weight loss regime for the first time in my life.
For someone who has never had to be concerned about weight, food intake etc before, I reckoned the task ahead was going to be considerably more difficult than for folks used to ‘weight watching’.
So for the past two weeks I have adopted the following regime.
Max of 1500 calories per day.
Food predominantly protein, fresh fruit & vegetables. No processed foods (except for some salami).
Sugar restricted to the 4 spoons I have in my daily 2 cups of black coffee (all other drinks plain water).
Carbohydrates restricted to a couple of Vitawheat crackers for evening snack & a couple of weetbix (with soy milk & a banana) for brekky a couple of times per week & a pot of long melon soup I put some rice noodles into.
Restructuring my eating times. This has been a biggie. Previously I never ever ate breakfast & ate little during the day, but had a big meal in the evening, often with pudding, followed by snacks throughout the evening until bedtime. (Packets of biccies, bars of chocolate etc which always got finished once opened). All that ‘energy’ intake followed by sleep!
So now I have ‘portion controlled’ brekkie, lunch & dinner, sometimes with a piece of fruit mid morning or afternoon. (Banana’s seem most effective at staving of ‘emptiness’).
I have never previously woken in the morning looking forward to brekkie. I now look forward to my bacon rasher, mushroom, celery & a small egg.
I have also been walking for a minimum of 1 hour per day, sometimes more - averaging 5 or 6kms each day.
Two days visitors stopped walks.
1 day a meal out at a friend’s well & truly blew the diet.
Today was the first weigh in.
Weight = 67.0kg - a loss of 2.3kg
Waist = 91cms - a loss of 3cms.
I’m really quite chuffed. Not so much by the weight loss, more by the reduction in waist size. It might sound silly, but I had feared that if I lost weight it might come off the rest of my skinny frame, leaving the bulging waistline even more prominent.
I have been surprised to recognise that there has been a significant proportion of my previous eating that was for pleasure rather than necessity. I’m not sure that I have previously actually been able to recognise ‘physical’ hunger. I have actually been enjoying my food more. Spices on salad work well.
Beating the ‘sugar addiction’ has been easier than I thought it would be.(so far).
The hardest aspect is to cope without carbohydrates to ‘fill’ me up, but it is manageable. Calorie counting takes some effort, but is becoming easier. Writing out a list of commonly eaten foods/quantities with how many calories each is has helped. Saves having to work stuff out each mealtime.
The theory I’m working on is:
1.To lose weight calories out have to be more than calories in - so exercise is important - I seem to be getting the balance ok because I am not getting fatigued.
2. Eating protein & fat is ok (within the calorie allowance) it is sugars which need to be avoided. This includes carbohydrates which the body converts to sugar. The body can only use very limited amount of sugar at any time, & any excess it turns to fat for storage.
3. For years I have thought of ’sugar’ as a source of energy. All this does is put you on a ’sugar rollercoaster’ with short lived ’sugar highs’ followed by ’sugar lows’. Most of the ‘energy’ in the ‘chocolate/biccies/puddings etc’ is short lived & much of it converted to fat. Eating ‘better’ food regularly throughout the day results in more sustainable energy levels.
Whether the theory is correct or not - I don’t know, but it seems to be working for me.
The best new ‘recipe’ in terms of enjoyment has surprisinly been tofu, pressed, dipped in egg, rolled in finely grated parmesan & baked, although the lentil curry with prawns last night was pretty bloody good. :)
MrsTea is also on the diet with me & doing it together is a significant factor, there is a competitive aspect & support in moments of temptation.
I’m hoping I might get down to 60kg, which seems realistic, but the challenge will be not falling into the old patterns justified by the knowledge that ‘I can lose it again’.

So I don't think I've posted in here yet but the missus and I have a little competition going we're both trying to lose a little weight. whoever loses the most weight for the week doesn't have to do the washing up. currently I'm down from 98 kilos to 92 and this is just by regulating the portion sizes that I eat and cutting out all carbohydrates. I no longer eat bread I have very little rice and if I do it's brown rice I'm pretty happy with the current result and my goal is to get down to 85 kilos. I'll keep you all posted as I go along

nah im dead serious about loosing the weight so no cheating, because im only cheating myself really. i dont want to be overweight for my wedding day. Thats over 1 year away (weve picked march 2016) so i have plenty of time to loose another 7 kilos, but not only do i wanna loose it i wanna keep it off and possibly even even tone up a bit. my old man if definately obese, suffers from chronic back pain and high blood pressure and i really really dont wanna end up like him. all my uncles are like that too so its hereditary. im gonna beat that and now is the time to do it. ive been steadily putting weight on since my heart operation and im pretty sure i weighed in at 99 or may have even made the 100 kgs.

according to the PDHPE teachers i work with, loosing weight is 80% diet (and portion control) and 20% exercise. they just recomended i change my diet to include more veggies and 'fillers' and reduce my carbs. protein is good, but i dont even feel like meat everyday.
heres a fun fact, celery is a GREAT filler because it will fill your stomach with somthing but because of its composition it will actually will burn fat. it has not nutritional value apart from a few vitamins and minerals and you gut has to work hard to process, therefore using more energy than you put it!
