Can the above save us???!!!
This fella seems to think so.
The stats he produce was pretty amazing, particularly the crazy drop of price of genome sequencing. The price has dropped from 2.7 billion in 1999 to a mere nothing in two years time from now. Right now it's around a grand.
Then look at how long it took to have a super computer in our palms.
I like the bloke's optimism more than anything else. Kinda helps with my depression about our future.

For those who wish to sequence their genome, for health reasons.
Who knows! Sequencing the genome and getting a health predicting report based on that might mean dramatically extending the lifespan(if action is taken :D)

Won't surprise me. There always is a commercial message hidden somewhere.
TedX itself can be. Capitalism at it's "best". ;)

Technology can save us. When we decide to stop focusing on using it to supply us with luxuries and start using it to make an actual difference.

Technology can save us. When we decide to stop focusing on using it to supply us with luxuries and start using it to make an actual difference.
Yeah, but the reason for success of capitalism and we don't give a damn about "share cropping"(communism) is that we like our gadgets and comforts, or rather we are addicted to them. It appears it's not in our nature to be happy with what we have or be happy our neighbours have the same possessions as us.
Technology most certainly can save us & considering the mess we've got ourselves into since the renaissance. Technology might be the only thing that can get us out of the mess we are in. For example solutions for population growth, climate change, etc can be partially or completely addressed using the technology. Thing is that our addictions and self destructive nature can get in the way.
But, either way, I like the optimism. It's depressing enough as it is, having to think about these problems in addition to get through each day.

Methinks some worry too much , worrying about something you have no control over will give you ulcers and one day someone will find you in the corner of your shed peeling the chrome off a Sidchrome shifter muttering something about aliens .

Possible. :D, but luckily for me, I own no Sidchrome tools. ;), and I know aliens have never visited earth. :D
But, I still worry. Who's gonna cook my dinner tonite? Those are profound questions. ;) :coffeetime:

Maybe if it manages to push our lifespans beyond a coupla centuries, perspective would change on what matters??? Maybe...

I hope not. The way the population is growing exponentially, (regardless of our knowledge on ill impact of it) any significant extension of lifespan won't do any good.

I think you hit the nail on the head.
Technology is great and we all thrive for it (sone might not agree) but we do, that is the fact. We all want things to be more conveniant ,we all want what we thought were luxuries to be a common place in our lives.
Do we want people living to a 130 years old. NO! The world can not sustain this. Simple!
There has to be limits on how we use technology.
This video, even though its just adverising a certain product is giving us a look into what is to come. It will be scary to some of the advances we will have in the future.
I reckon take a seat and enjoy the ride, we can not stop technology advances...hopefully it wont fark us in the end [emoji1]

They will be facing the music of what we leave behind. But, there are signs of some of them having bit more grey matter in their brains than we do. I try to be optimistic even when it is not realistic, 'cos it does help with new ideas & solutions

Yeah, I hope it won't screw us as well mate, but I think it is as we're speaking.
I go with George Carlin with most of this stuff. We need to stop the population growth right where it is now, yet we are too busy
with getting the latest, fanciest gadget. Perhaps, like Carlin said, we should either do something or just enjoy the ride.
Complaining won't get us anywhere.

I dont think the latest gadgets etc have anything to do with it.
As harsh as it might sound we need to let people die when they are done with life, not when the technology lets them go. Let it be natural without machines and pills!
They should decide when it is time and not some other farkwit in hospital thinking it is the right thing to do.
Might be straying a bit here but anyway....my thought

I meant being too simplistic and becoming bit too blind to the changes around us.
Pursuit of gizmos in everyday life has turned some of us into automatons.
Yep, euthanasia should be legal when a person decide to go.

Technology well and good, but we can't escape the simple fact that we live on a planet with finite resources.
There have been many fictional stories (books, movies etc) that focus on what would happen when we reach limits on one or more of these resources, be it fuel, water or some other commodity.
It's simple maths that you have to divide the resource by the population. We can't iincrease the resource so the only option is to limit the population. Human society has a neat trick to control population. When resources are abundant and leisure becomes part of life, we inherently reduce the number of offspring to sustain the population without too much growth so that we can enjoy our leisure time. When resources become scarce and survival is the focus we increase the number of offspring to try and sustain the population.
This is why it is important that resources must be distributed amongst the population to a level that the poorest at least get to a point where they will reduce their growth.

Yesterday as next of kin we had to decide on the end of life for the wife's auntie who was on life support in a hospital. We knew it would be her choice but as she had not given written instructions and was no communicative we had to almost retell her life story so that the doctors could agree that it would be a choice she would make.

Funny part of the medical ethics is that the doctors and the 'police' has no trouble turning off somebody's life support when they determine somebody's brain dead, regardless of whether the loved one like the idea or not. That is for financial reasons rather than medical reasons 'cos lifesupport systems cost a fortune to run and not many available so they need them vacant for new arrivals of patients. 'Brain deadness' is a tricky area.
