So........ Photobucket ,where for over 10 years ive been putting photos that you guys see here, have now decided to change there "terms of use".

Long story short, if i (or anyone), wishes to continue any third party hosting of pics (upload pic to photobucket, then link so they can be seen on a web site) any users still wanting this function (that we have used for years and is the WHOLE POINT of the site) we will now have to pay $399 a year.

No ,i did not miss a decimal point , just short of four hundred dollars :furious:

I just spend the day downloading what i can from the site and deleted my account.

They asked (computer generated) why i am deleting, this is a cut and paste of what i wrote....

Your new terms of service ,ensure the whole point of ever using your site, is now 100% unrealistically NON affordable.

Extortion is illegal in my country, and what goes around , comes around, it will be interesting to see if Photobucket is still around in 5 years ?

I hope the ultimate demise of Photobucket, will for a years to come, serve as a reminder to others, on how NOT to treat people if you want to stay in business.

This pretty much wrecks anY thread i (and others) have ever posted a pic on, i will do my best to salvage my pic thread (04off pics) but this will take ages.

Im sure the rest of the world will be sending photobucket a clear message real soon.:fish:

I think the mass exodus has started.

Yeh im exhausted now after a full day, not what i needed this weekend.

My biggest problem was ive had 2 computers die over recent times taking pics with them, photobucket still had some pics i no longer have (in lower res), but i thought no worries, they are safe.

Im not against someone making money, but from zero to $399 a year .....WTF !

Anyway, im not sure what to do now about hosting or the forums ive got pics, this forum is really the only one that had all the good ones and was pretty up to date, to tired to think about it all now, but if you have any suggestions on my pic thread Andy please let me know ?

It might not be such a smart idea to delete everything already. If the backlash is as big as some think it could be, they might reverse their decision. Deleted photos on their site ruin the thread permanently.

I must have missed all the discussion about this.
This is disastrous! Obviously they were anticipating this kind of backlash and impact and didn't make the decision lightly. The only real justification was that it was costing them money to run the website and this is their last ditch effort to recoup some costs.
I imagine there would be some big corporates out there that would have no hesitation in paying $400 to recover some images.

I can believe it and who's 2 say tapatalk don't do the same or any other 3rd party storage? Storage 2 the forum is your best bet

I have and will never rely on 3rd party software when it comes 2 images on forums and will never rely solely on forums 2 keep an important information not that I have much.....

Its like living in a fire prone area and storing your backups on a HDD in your house that just burnt down

While on most accounts , and a wise person would agree, you are 100% correct, and yes this is probly what i "should do".

But im sorry, i am angry, so my view is ........F@#K those C&*Ts, i don't want want a bar of there site, even if it returns to the way it was, they deserve to lay in the bed they have made for them selves, should that bed catch fire , i shall be not be willing to supply the steam off my urine to help put out that fire, may they burn in hell........

OK, I've just checked mine and it still works on a few forums I've linked to however I'm suspicious that's due to other option. (mirror remote images on forum as well) I also suspect that me being very low user this policy applies to the individuals with rather large collections.

I guess following applies ==> Storage Vs Bandwidth What s The Difference- (http://support.photobucket.com/hc/en-us/articles/200724504-Storage-Vs-Bandwidth-What-s-The-Difference-)

So these people have realized that via 3rd party they don't get any advertising revenue plus it costs them the bandwidth, they don't want to subsidise 3rd party advertising business I suppose. I'm not defending Photobucket at all but it is just there is a lot of hidden cost running web service where money gouging is phenomenal between the networks providers and web services operators of which many users are blissfully unaware when browsing websites or use a service and it looks like Photobucket's revenue model has fallen to such low levels they can't absorb the costs of providing a free service based on advertising alone.

In any case I have zero sympathy towards these pigs (apologies to porkies) I rarely use these services anyway because the simple: "if you are not paying for a product you are the product". I'm not shedding any tears for sure if Photobucket disappears... although I much prefer it happened to G$$gle or Fakebook but those crims are just too big now.

Imguir is another service which will go down eventually as many investors are questioning its value as the service has not figured out how to monetize the product....

Regards

Edit: I have deleted the account on there too so apologies for ruined posts. Anyway as a side not I had to disable all the adblockers and trackers protection to be able to delete the account and the amount of advertising I have been subjected to during that process OMFG!!! Never ever again!

pretty much agree ^^^^^

All angst aside, realistically this issue is in two parts.
PB act as a storeage for your pics so you can access them from any device, any time, anywhere for free.
Up until now PB also 'hotlinked' your images to any other source (forums, blogs, auction sites etc) for free.
Photobucket, doesn't get tangible benefit from users hotlinking images, only a ginormous bandwidth useage fee.

Storeage uses memory which is a relatively cheap overhead.
Hotlinking uses bandwidth which is a hideously expensive overhead and access to the stored pics of, say, a Blogger or Auction House must be huge.

PB used to cover costs by home site advertising and cannot afford to do so any longer.
PB will still host and store for free for you.
PB will no longer hotlink which is a great expense to them (relatively speaking) but free to everyone else to monetise as they see fit.

The manner and speed PB have addressed the issue is pretty average and blowed if I can see $400 in it.

Do I see that PB cannot stay the way the model currently is, yes

Will other sites go the same way, yes, unless they can monetise the images to cover bandwidth.
How soon will other sites do that?... pretty bloody fast as all the bloggers etc depart from PB and chews up the other hosting sites bandwidth.

Bottom line is PB are still willing to host and let you access your pics for free, they just want a share of the cabbage that 3rd parties are making from the pics and, again, yes, IMHO $400 seems totally unrealistic to me.

Cuppa
2nd July 2017, 12:59 PM
It was the doing it without warning & retrospectively which stinks. Either a very cynical move with the hope of creating sufficient anxiety to get folk to shell out the unreasonable $400 a year or a poorly considered ignorant/arrogant move by out of touch folks. Process is so important & I reckon they may have miscalculated .......... unless it is a last ditch effort to stay afloat, but even then a different approach could have garnered a lot more support.

Yes there was, as i was going through each photo album , periodically one of my pictures had been replaced with as you describe, i could still see a small thumbnail of the real image, but could not see the full size.

I was lucky they chose/replaced images that are not my favorites , and i just excepted losing them as collateral damage, also left a heap of 4x4 photos behind, as just saving the good stuff took all day :frown:

But yeh ,this actually means they were not even letting "me" see "all" of my own pics.

As AB has already answered no, I don't believe any 3rd party AB will every have the ability 2 store images 2 the forum, only way 2 keep photo's safe withing the forum and on the forums server is by directly uploading 2 the forum. Then the only way you will loose them then is if the servers HDD fails and someone has been slack with backups

Very possible and probable I say!!!

I can't run this script until I figure out photobucket first as once this script runs it could ruin the dead photobucket links so I need to somehow work that out first then run this program which will secure any 3rd party apps and websites.

I have an idea if members can download their albums. Give them to me and I run a custom find and replace URL change from PB to NP but that may be hard to do.

Ok great news, this new mod does work, it pulls every 3rd party image into the forum and saves it locally and references that on where the 3rd party image was on the forum.

Bad news, it doesnt work for PB photos.

I'll run this soon and we will be safe from any other 3rd party companies in the future changing their terms.

In the mean time before I run this we need to solve PB issue.

Anyone have any bright ideas?

Options so far are...

Users put their photos back in the missing posts - Nightmare!
Somehow work out a find and replace attachment script, users download their PB accounts and give me the folders - Working on this but not sure if this can be done.
Users pay for the yearly fee, we run this script and problem solved - Not likely for users to fork out $400

Working on option 2

Nah we're good old mate, the script is running and we're still here.

It's running 100 batches at a time otherwise we will crash!

We have 715,000 posts in batches of 100 = 7150 processes so the forum should be all done and referencing every single image locally in about a week or so.

I have excluded all images from Photobucket until we can work out a decision on this?

Steve is your PB account still active or is it gone now?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes its still active @AB, but from what he has already said it sounds like we might have lost them already on here :(

Don't forget Photobucket could also use your images royalty free, selling photo books, framed prints etc to third parties, this is the main reason i chose to delete my account, rather than leave my pics there for them to use, as i am now getting nothing from the partnership deal they made, so shall they get nothing from me. :p

I have the images as downloaded from PB, im not beyond attempting to rebuild my pic thread somehow , as id like to keep it going, just not really sure what to do yet.

I guess ill do nothing until the dust settles, and wait for suggestions from you guys, i know something will have to be done with mine (and other peoples threads), at the very least ill get the pics back on here somewhere in a thread, even if it means they all go on in a consecutive upload.

Im sure i can remember where they are taken, even if i cant remember the dates, so at least i can add some form of description. :D

Ok thanks Steve. At this stage don't rename or move any photos out of the folder structure you downloaded.

Did it download the albums you had on PB as folders with the photos in each folder or did it just download one complete folder with all of your images?

I downloaded each pic individually, i don't think you can download a complete "album" with one click ?

I guess the pics may have PB file names that may allow allocation to where they were in my thread ? ,im on a different PC at present, so can't ,(in other words im too lazy) to check right now.

There has been a lot of talk about "Ransomware" in the news lately, this whole Photobucket bullshit has been a case of legal but immoral ransomware.
I really hope the assholes responsible for this lose their jobs when it all backfires for them.

You can from their web site, but in saying that I have a slow internet connection 2 the pc at home so though I would try and download Darren's CV build thread on my phone but could not see the option when using the phone even though it was still using a browser and not an app

I use google drive for storing data online which costs me around 2 bucks a month for about 100gb(you get free extras when using their products)
Obviously you can't link pics to forums, etc but I find it very useful and can download and upload to the forum pretty quickly

I just use Paint, cut and past, crop and resize , but it is only good for thumbnails. Hopefully AB has rectified this.

I don't ( besides trying photobucket a times years ago ) and probably never use a 3rd party for pic hosting for this very reason. I only really upload photo's 2 three places on the net, here, a reptile forum and FB. FB is fair the easiest 2 upload 2 but still prefer 2 upload directly 2 the forum as it resides on @AB's server then and if something goes wrong then i can punch him in the neck, and know its more likely 2 get fixed rather than deal with other 3rd party companies.

Out of curiosity, you don't rely on 3rd party companies for backups do you???

I don't have any control of any settings with forum apps but yep, with the new fangdanglegadgetthinggy we are good to go with any 3rd party images hosted on the forum moving forward.

Nah i don't , but am kinda slack when it comes to storing pics, ive had a bad run with PCs and hard drives dying on me, also being slack with backing up, ive got stuff ive lost, and other stuff all over the place, i am just slack in general really, and seem to have so much going on in life all the time, i just can't be bothered.

PB was a easy and a lazy way for me to know all my pics are safe in one place, and while not the best quality, i didn't really care.

Ive got pics of heaps of cool cakes that ive made, yet even after 18 years or so of making them, i still don't have them all in one folder "anywhere", i guess id be lying if i said i didn't like to show off what little skills i do have, but im too busy living the dream, than to worry about showing everyone i am.

I will now try to change and put in some more effort, i should put together a cake thread, as i have some pretty cool creations im told.

I think someone mentioned before Matty, it could be to do with the amount of traffic looking at your images, not sure if PB would register every time a thread with their 3rd party hosted pics is opened ?

Just looked ,and my pic thread had nearly 60,000 views, i would guess , out of that many views, one would think it would have drawn a few people to visit the PB site itself ?

This is why i felt it is important for me, if you have good images hosted on PB (ones you think they can sell), to delete them so they can't keep making money from your stuff (this includes add revenue raised from visitors to your account)

AB

Ok, here is a solution to the PB issue. Too early for this but someone was thinking the exact idea I had...

It's a bit of a daunting task and needs help from members though.

First off, PB users need to download their entire PB account using a special Google Chrome plugin someone has recently created to stick it up PB.

This plugin downloads all of your album structure inside your PB account.
https://chevereto.com/community/threads/photobucket-debacle-and-file-naming.8691/

I want to report that it worked for me, I was able to restore all pics posted by me going back almost 10 years in just a few hours. I offer this information to help anyone in the same situation.
Step 1. Use Chrome browser. Install the chrome extension Download Photobucket Album. This will allow you to quickly download complete photobucket albums, otherwise impossible. Here's the link to it https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...mpbbfglflhdhbmimlcacoojpkeopelc/reviews?hl=en (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/photobucket-album-downloa/jmpbbfglflhdhbmimlcacoojpkeopelc/reviews?hl=en)
Step 2. I'll use a Mass File Rename program to rename images with "%20" (sometimes photobucket adds this to file names) and substitute it with "-".
Step 3. I'll Upload images to NP with Original/no date folder file naming.
Step 4. Run SQL query in the forum database (in the case of vbulletin it's the mst_post table) to replace all instances of "%20" with "-".
Step 5. Run SQL query in the forum database to replace all instances of the photobucket URL section with your new domain.
