View Full Version : Smoke from RH tyre

After coming down from a mountain via a windy road I stopped at a lookout and found my RH tyre was smoking. I let it cool down again and checked again at the bottom, same deal, smoke! I was first thinking it might be a rock stuck in the brakes because they had been resurfacing a large part of the road. On further inspection I found oil on what I think is the outside brake calliper and there was none on the LH tyre. Any idea on what I'm up for replacing?

It can only really be brake fluid or diff oil if you have found a leak ... you will need to take the rim off to check.
Then it could be anything from a simple seal kit, through to a bent axle housing

It seems to me it might be motor oil. The dip stick is getting a bit low. Definitely not brake fluid. Diff oil wouldn't be right hand front would it?

How does motor oil get on the brake caliper? The caliper is not under the motor so it cant drip onto it. Can you post up a pic?

Was there a smell when you got out and looked?
It does sound like you've popped a caliper piston seal though.

Yeah there was a smell. Workshop are going to take the front apart and regressed all the insides just to be safe.

Looks like you axle seal is well and truly gone there mate and is leaking past the swivel hub seal. If it aint brake fluid it will be the axle seal no doubt.

What!!!! I could fly to townsville, change the seal and fly back to melbs for less. Its a two hour job, and a seal is around 25-30$!!! Go somewhere else! And fast!

Well there was smoke coming out the same tyre coming down a windy mountain road the other day. Maybe he is doing something else to it. He was talking about doing something with the diff and oils and regreasing the bearings too

He will be doing a full teardown, cleanout, new seals, repack / replace bearings and re-build ... it isn't a small job, and possibly best to be done by someone you trust.
I wouldn't do this on my own without some mechanical knowledge. You need quite a few tools, a bit of time and muscle and all the seals, grease, oils, and bits and pieces, so the prices add up quickly.
It is not a job I would do for $100 ... best just get it done in my opinion

Still a lot of coin for the work in my opinion.
Rough breakdown of costs.
Axle seal $30 OEM retail app.
Swivel hub seal $50 OEM retail app.
4 ltrs of diff oil $50
Maybe 4 hours of work for removal, for cleaning and reinstal, at worst. Say $80 per hour.
Dont take my calculations as gospel, but I do think you need to get a second opinion. Even with new pads added in, brand depending, Their price is getting up there.
I could be wrong though. It might just be how much they all charge. I do my own work, well most of it, so this obviously saves me a bucket load of coin. So $700 for that type of work is a bit surprising to me.
But i would get a second opinion, then you can gauge it from there.

... don't let them charge a recycling fee either.
Going by the pics there won't be any diff oil left to drain and recycle. :D

Yeah I just bit the bullet and got it done. Have to head to Brisbane from Townsville on Friday so best to have it done for a few extra $'s then not. I'm sure I could work out how to do it but just don't have the time at the moment.
When I sell my boat I'll be able to convert my side of the garage into a workshop and do more stuff myself. I

Yeah really? Seemed a lot to me. But I have never paid someone to do it so I would really know.

Only new to Townsville so still working out the right places to go to. Have heard from a few 4x4 sites on fb and that who recommend this mob, so will see how they go.
I will be making sure the next few things are done myself as paying other people costs way to much! Pity one of the jobs I have to do on her soon is the clutch.
Same mob said $2250 for exedy clutch and machined flywheel. Is it even needed? I feel a standard clutch would be much easier on the pocket

A standard clutch will be o.k. But a heavy duty clutch will be much better. The cost difference wont be that far apart between the two clutches anyway. Also the workshop are probably not real keen on putting a stand clutch back in, as a heavy clutch can with stand driver abuse a lot better there for less of a chance of any warranty work in the future for them. The flywheel has to be machined aswell, its part of the work.
I can't remember the going rate for a clutch change over but I think i was charged around the $1800 mark when I did mine a few years back. It took them a day to do the job.

I thought outside the box and offered a local mechanic I know for it to be a cash job. Pretty confident it's going to help cutdown costs.

I've done it once with the help of my dad which is an ex diesel mechanic, shit of a job.
When my GQ was running before I stuffed it, the mechanic said one of the seals needed doing before it would pass the blue slip.... I said yeh no worries that's your job I ain't either doing that again

done a couple of these, i just do the whole lot while i'm at it. a second person to help put the cv back in is very helpful
