Hey guys,

I have a mate with a 2008 CRD30 and has a hole in the Cat. I assume it's illegal to remove or delete it but what's the go? Given the cost to replace the Cat are most just deleting it? Any recommendations on exhaust replacements? Size and suppliers.

He doesn't want it to drone so was concerned about going to a 3". Who has done what?

I know nothing of 3.0s. What's the go.

Cheers MR

Beaudesert 2.75" for the win. Good sound, better tourqe down low and no overboost issue. Comes with a sports cat and egt bung

Which ever way Darren do not remove the CAT. With my old 3ltr I was pulled up twice, in the same place too, from an RTA check and both times the first thing they did was climb under with a heat gun and check for the cat. As far as I'm aware the fine is a few k if caught without. There is plenty of options available with performance cats to stick with a cat.

I got a Genie Legendex 3" and am happy with it, doesn't overboost and sounds good.

Great feedback thanks Mark.

Appreciate all the replies gents. I have sent a link for this thread to my mate who is not a member.

I'll just add to my comment about being pulled over by the RTA and the use of their heat gun. They use the gun to detect if the cat has been gutted or not. A gutted cat will show less difference in surface heat compared to a, not gutted, cat. So its easier for them to spot.

Good thing they cannot check if the EGR has been blocked.

Are you saying they can check?

If they know what they are looking for, and the plate is thicker than a steel gasket would be, then yeah I reckon they can. They wouldn't need to prove it there and then, they would just simply report it down with anything else they find. Same goes with a suspension lift. A mate of mine got done by a Mansfield copper in Alexandra and they just noted down the lift is too high. Not by how much.

Yeah mate , they can check. Here the cops set up nets where they railroad cars through a car park. Usually a large library car park or a garden car park. They have everything there. Bretho tests, drug tests, Sheriff, highway patrol, EPA etc... They pull out a fact sheet on their computer for your vehicle and go over it with a fine comb. They sit there all day, and the next day there is at least 30-40 cars cannaried or clamped down for various things.
I went through about a year and a half ago... And they were too busy shafting me for the decibels for my straight through exhaust to look any further.
My mate recently went through with his Forester diesel which has the DPF filter burn off thing on it... And they spent a bit of time making sure he didn't delete it, as like the EGR, people commonly get rid of it as it's just shit.
Usual cops and highway patrol would be none the wiser, but when EPA is there they know what's going on.

big thing inS.A. at the moment is the blanking plate for the egr
checking all 4x4 and big fines and defecting them
mate came back from W.A and was checked 3 times on his trip back last week

Do you know how they were checking? By looking, spending the time to remove the egr pipe or using some sort of magical wand? I suppose, some plates I have seen are over 2mm thick. Dead giveaway that is.

I think they would have a hard time checking for the blanking plate as it is very thin and not easy to see and I would not allow them to remove the EGR pipe.

Which state/area are you located Hodge?
Does anyone know if the EPA has started to do roadside tests since dieselgate or have they been doing this before VW got caught?

Victoria mate, Melbourne. Northern suburbs, there are two common spots where they set this up. At least once a month.

I am in Bundoora so very close. Where do they do the testing?

So you've been living next door to me and Mudski all this time. lol I'm in Thomo on the bundoora side east of Dalton Rd.

They always setup traps down on Camp rd at Jack roper reserve car park, right before Broady.
And the other one is on Pascoe vale road swimming pool. Large car park. They funnel and cram as many cars in there as they can then shut it off, and then they go to town dishing out cannaries and sherrif clamps, etc...

Thanks for the info.

I am actually moving there next week as I purchased a house just west of Plenty Road so not too far but not too close to these locations either. My egr blank is on the exhaust side under the heat plate so not easy to detect. On the other hand I drive around with the check engine light on all the time. Never really goes off.

Has anyone ever been picked up for having the Dawes and Needle valve set up? Is it OK to just have these two connected to the engine?

Don't think so... I mean never heard of it.
I know the manual boost controllers are a no no. So, in a way Dawes and needle act as a manual boost controller.
I doubt they would know if it's tucked away and look like normal vacuum lines.

they seem to know what to look for
thin plate between housing and a catch can can be a dead giveaway

Yeah never heard of anyone being done for the Dawes and needle valve but they are technically an illegal mod. As the Turbosmart controller, or similar, is for the TD42's, and any other motor that uses them.

Exactly . They know what they are looking at . They aren't stupid. And at the end of the day if they suspect something and can't prove it on the day, e.g. don't want to pull it apart. They will send you for a roadworthy. Where in the meantime you can remove anything that's not meant to be there lol.
