Hey guys, I've finally had enough of my HID headlight globes. I had never been a fan of them but have always had an LED light bar as well so wasn't too fussed. I have just removed the light bar and now night driving is hard work, I can't bloody see!
From my research there seem to be two types of LED headlight replacements. One just looks like a bunch of LEDs and the other which looks like a better design has reflectors. Looks aren't everything though, has anybody had any experience in these?

I can't say for the ones you have listed but Speaker are probably the best in these sorts of lights.

Buuuuut the price of these are a bit way over the top.

They do look sexy though....

Yeah, unfortunately I'm looking at about a max of $200 although I know the JW Speaker are the best out there.

So the blurb says they are eve compliant which means they meet Aust regs but are they a legal VicRoads sanctioned upgrade? Also, how expensive is expensive- can't see a price?

The Speakers are around $800
From what I have read they are not legal to install on a GQ Patrol.

Have a word with Paul at the ledlightco Winnie, I saw some in his site last night, he might be able shed some light on the subject

Dunno why it would be for GQ and not for any other road vehicle. Its just a 7inch round light that universally fits into any 7inch cradle. I seen them on a customers Cab over Kenworth. He reckons the light output is stunning.

I like the second one mate. there are cheaper ones the same as those too. Paul Lights definitely sells something along those lines too.

Has the HID balloon popped? I thought you were meant to be able to see a k up the road, or maybe that was for spotties.

I've never been tempted into the HID's only because I do so little night driving it's not worth it, and what little I do OE does me OK. Just asking.

Mine had HIDs when I bought it, lasted a few months before I removed them and stuck New lenses with halogens back in...... Couldn't deal with the colour and the fact I had to adjust them down so I wouldn't blind anyone, was pointless having them then, couldn't see shizen

Maybe mine are starting to die but honestly Plassy I hate them. Like Clunk I used to get flashed by oncomings so have then adjusted pretty far down and the result is a dark road ahead.
That being said I used to have HID spotlights which were awesome.

I'll get onto Paul at LED Light Co and see what he can offer.

The issue is that the vehicle didn't come with them from factory so while you can install them they are illegal unfortunately, pretty sure its all in the VSB regs unless Vic has different rules which I doubt.

Yes they are illegal, many many GQs are running around Vic with HID Headlights though. The reasons Winnie stated are bang on the reason people are taking them out now, also they have been getting policed for a few years too. I have been seriously thinking about the JK Jeep units you have posted Winnie for the last couple of years. I have a few mates that run one that Lights got in and it was awesome. Never asked price as I'm a ways away.

Do you know what your mates think of theirs?

OK Just called him. He ran them on a Comp car that did little road work and did Bush and Comp stuff. He said i should run them on my GQ for sure. BUT..

They are Awesome for you as a driver but are pretty glarey for the oncoming like a HID. He reckons they have a more defined beam than a HID so not quite as bad but still hideous. He does not recommend them on a Daily driver or a car that sees a lot of city.

His recommendation was an upgraded sealed beam. Something like an 80/120 with a super loom upgrade will be the best option for a daily GQ.

They should be okay for my GQ then which is only driven on roads at night about twice a year.

Finally got to drive the patrol with the new led globes instead of the hid globes. First impression is the light is whiter but does not throw as far as the hid globes did, both in the same 7" hella inserts. Will be interested in how they come upon dark wet roads and what life I get out of them. Could be a stepping stone to the led inserts.

Unfortunately Vic-Roads believe that 3M contract & reflectivity is greater than our 20/20 eyeballs! I personally can't see shit with LED's and are now finding a way to power up old school voltage sucker brown light, lol :-)

You will get excellent results with a piranha headlight loom kit and some fat max of Philips blue max globes, they run at circa 80w low beam and 100 high. You big alternator will keep the juice up to them nicely. I am running the led globes thru the piranha loom and happy at the moment
