Hi guys, absolutly new in the patrol forum.
Bit about me:
Im Christian, 29 yo german bloke, moved to Australia 2 years ago, brisbane area.
One of the reason why I wanna stay in your country, 4x4!
Having an old triton at the moment but planing to upgrade to an GU in next months.
Had a look at many different facebook forums about different engines.
Obviously all the zd 30 people told me to buy one, and all the td42 people told me to go for td42...
What about the 4.8? So far, i didnt heard much bad stuff about them, besides the economy.
I use it mostly for touring (no trailer), lots of sand driving but will be my daily driver aswell.
Budget about 20k at the moment , but... If you reckon should save 10k more to get a decent td42, would be good to know aswell.

I just wanna have something reliable which will be on my side for next 10 years or so without big dramas.

So im just after a few opinions, which one is the right one for me? Anything special i should look out for? Anything to be aware of?

Thx in advance guys
Christian

G'day Christian, welcome aboard mate! We built our business many years ago off the back of a 2000 GU DX 4.2TD only mate. Like an old faithful first dog, miss her so much, RIP DX mate :-) !

Just a thought Christian. There is a member on here from Brisbane area unfortunately selling his pride and joy 2004 coil cab 4.2 ute. Probably the most knowledgeable diesel guru on here, reckon it would suit you and the Mrs very well ! nissannewby are you still sure it has to go mate?

You'll get the same response here too no doubt........ Your best bet is to try out each one and see for yourself.

I've only had GQs, first one was a TB42E petrol auto, the one I have now is a TD42 diesel. Each had/has it's own merits.

Tb42e was cheaper to buy, nicer to drive, cheaper to service, but thirstier so meant filling up more often. But the price of fuel is also cheaper

The td42 cost more to buy, costs more to service, and cost more to fill up the tank. But you do go a fair bit further to a tank.

In saying would I have my old TB42E back? In a heart beat! Quicker, more power and I found it to be comfortable for everyday use.

At the end of the day tou can get as much advise as yoi want, but it's your choice and you need to decide what it is that you actually want it for, how often are you going to
be actually using it offroad, will you be using it for towing, if not now, then maybe in the future?

P.S. welcome to the forum and enjoy what it has to offer

With your budget of $20k you'll be able to buy an early model 4.2td GU with plenty of accessories

Mark beat me to it. I read the original post and instantly thought yep... If Christians after a ute. Then this vehicle is a dream come true. Providing the budget stars align ...
