Hey guys,

Just after a little bit of advice in buying a new trailer. I am buying an 8x5 tandem trailer with a cage, it will be used for firewood and that's about it.
I have two choices at the moment, same price but some slight differences.

Option 1: http://galvanisedtrailerco.com.au/trailers/tandem/8x5-tandem-trailer/
40mm axles
50mm x 50mm x 2.5mm chassis
330mm cross rail spacing underneath
Car tyres

Option 2: http://www.balancetrailers.com.au/products/box-trailers/bt85t/bt85twb/
45mm axles
70mm x 50mm x 3mm chassis
430mm cross rail spacing underneath
Light truck tyres

Option 2 seems like a stronger trailer to me but curious if the larger spacing between supports will be a big deal?

Whats the floor sheet thickness of the 2.

Option a for sure then.
Its cross members you want for strength.
Option B Being 100mm wider but still the same floor thickness you'll be buckling and bowing the floor in no time with wood going in and out..
You can easily add a small underside cord or truss to the 50x50 draw bar if its a bit lite, but its major work to add cross rails..

Just for wood I think if price was the same I'd go option 2 , heavier chassis , the 6x4 I use the is rusted so bad the only thing it's got going for it is the heavier section underneath .
But it is probably 30 plus years old and had dogs pissing all over it for years .

Pretty sure the paint is structural on this one .

ghee that second trailer looks like a beast though. the chassis will be way stronger on the second one as will be the axles and everything else. I agree the spacing is not ideal though but everything else looks very heavy duty for a domestic trailer. I think either will see you for many years to come mate.

either will do the job fine for a long time without seeing both in the flesh its hard to say which way id go. personally ive had 2 trailers built by victorian trailers in thomastown one a 8x5 tandem tradie trailer thats copped a flogging for nearly 10 years on rough civil construction sites and aa 7x5 off road custom built to my specs. can also say i loke the look of the trailers coming out of hoppers crossing trailers, while there picking up some parts to rebuild my boat trailer over newyears i was given a tour of the plant and everything is very well made

the one thing i will say is get electric brakes. or if you wont go electric get hyd drums instead of cable disk, the disk setup is just harder to adjust right, personally ive got both, hyd drums on my work 8x5 tradies trailer and disc on my 1.8t boat, and id take the drums any day over the discs

Do they give an option for stud pattern? Always handy to have stud pattern match the tow vehicle.

Either look to me to be fine, but not even looking at the links and just going by the specs you posted I picked option 2.

Cheers guys. I've seen both trailers in the flesh and the 2nd one I posted looks to have better welds as well.

Been looking for months mate, nothing ever comes up and when it does they are way too dear.
Seems that people like to hang on to tandem trailers!
Winter is coming real fast and I need to keep my family warm so need to get something asap.

Ahhhh righteo, me being me was just thinking it's quite an expense for a bit of kit that's not going to be used a whole heap.

Please don't take my comment the wrong way

What about Traralgon trailers, checked our their ones. We've got a 8x5 tandem at work, very good size can fit heaps in & tows well. [emoji4]

Pretty expensive though. A little bit dearer and not galvanised. Probably a better trailer though.

All good mate. I did want to go 2nd hand but did not expect them to hold value so well. A 10 year old trailer is still worth around 2k and that's without a cage too. I would end up spending about 300 fixing one up and by then might as well get a newy.

Id like to know where they get their checker plate from. They say 2.5mm which is an odd size for checker plate. Can you ask the to measure the thickest part of the checker plate?

Checker plate will be slightly stronger than a normal flat mild steel plate as it pressed to form the pattern. So the raised parts are the original thickness while the lower section is the pressed more dense area.

I would be going option 2 without to much thought.

Yeah its not proper checker plate. There is a trailer manufacturer here who uses real checker plate but a trailer from them is 6k.

Can you order the second trailer with nissan stud pattern or not worth it??

Winnie
4th April 2017, 09:02 PM
Seeing as MB's idea of a dual cab GQ with tipper tray is slightly out of the budget (damn!) I have ordered the second trailer from balance trailers. They reckon they'll have it ready for Saturday morning.

I could but would add a lot to the cost and for not much gain really.

I'd ask to get a heavier floor and also get more paint coats inside. Thats waht I did on one of mine . Shouldnt cost too much extra

I'd also upgrade one of the axles with Electric brakes mate. No brainer on a trailer that is rated more than 1
Ton. Remember my near miss on the way to your wedding mate. My camper brakes failed and the camper easily pushed my GU where I didn't want to go. That trailer full of wood will be a couple of ton and you will be thankful for the brakes. Worth every extra cent

It would look bloody sexy with those alloy wheels you have off the Camry!

If youre exceeding 2 tonnes, then breakaway function is needed and only electric brakes capable of that. But seriously who has an 8x5 with breakaway function??

Your right.
But an 8x5 with those height sides would easily be 4-5 cube.
So I'd say 2 ton is very achievable.

I would too, especially with 400 wide spacing. .
But they are bought from China and assembled. So I'd think any mods out side of their options wouldn't happen.
Also they are all hot dipped galv.

It does have manual override brakes. One day I will change to electric when I put brakes on my camper.

The trailer is only rated to 2 tonne so doesn't have breakaway. Could easily fit more than 2 tonne though.

From memory my 10" electric brakes on nissan stud pattern hubs
and a solid 50" x 50" axle was about $700.
then you have the cost of a controller
This was a custom size to suit my camper.
I also fitted Orac off road leaf springs with greasable shackles
I take it your trailer will have slipper springs fitted??

If I had $2700 to spend on a trailer then option No2 would be my pic ,
then I would get a piece of alloy checker plate cut and cover in the draw bar.
Then you have a place to service your chain saws and set up a stove for a cuppa
