Hi guys.

Just bought a 1990 GQ Patrol, TD42T with a dual battery system.

I'm wanting to fit a turbo timer to it, since it has the 24v starting system, do I also need to use a 24v turbo timer? Or is it just the main feed to the starter that's 24v, and the ignition system is 12v???

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum!

What type/brand of dual battery system has it got?

Have you bought a Nissan Safari or a Nissan Patrol?

Hello Milan and welcome to the forum, unless you drive like Mario Andretti
I dont think you'll need a Turbo Timer, plus they are illegal I think, not for me
Ask anythink you like and most of all enjoy

I'm in NZ, don't think they're illegal here?
It's a 1990 Y60 GQ Safari, not a Patrol sorry. Factory 24v dual battery system, though the previous owner has had the batteries relocated to the boot (pretty annoying tbh) as well getting a Holeset HX35 fitted.
Now the problem is that this is a daily driver for me and since I do drive like Mario Andretti and my work is located just off the motorway, things are still running pretty hot by the time I pull into the parking lot (perpetually late) and it's convenient to have the option to leave it to cool off a bit and keep circulating fluids.

As for enjoying it, without a doubt! First 4x4 after a lifetime of hot hatches and sports sedans. Torque is its own kind of fun.

An old thread, but has a few reasons as to why they are illegal here.
Mate's old EXA turbo had a timer on the thermo fan that kept airflow through the engine bay when shutdown. That was standard off the production line.

Wile a turbo timer does help cool things down by keeping cooland and oil circulating, the main point of them is to keep a flow of oil to the journal/ball bearings in the turbo and stop them wearing against the shaft and housing. A thermo fan is not going to help with this, and I don't understand why there's so much 'fear and misunderstanding' around them. Sure, letting the engine idle down for a few minutes will accomplish exactly the same thing but it's not always convenient.

Surely someone here has fitted one and knows the answer to the question, otherwise I'll dig out my multimeter and let y'all know. As for statements that they're illeagal/reasons not to do it.... Thaaaaaaanks.
