Cool videos.
The pullpal is somethng you can make out of scraps. Just a bit of welding.

And he goes 4x4ing in that, no wonder he got "stuck" just for purpose of demostrating that Pul-pal
they have been around for over 25 yrs maybe longer,,,,,, big and bulky imo

I'd think the Army had land anchors for remote recoveries

Yeah, land anchors are good. Just need a longer anchor going deep into the sand though.
Little bit of hitting with a sledge hammer may be?

Yeah, combination of winch ropes with chains sounds like a good idea for long winch rope applications.

Yep, it is bulky. It might save the trouble of having to stabilize sand anchors by saving few minutes. :)

Loved the Arabs effort mate, quite crafty really in an emergency!

The snow one's got a custom built carrier behind the spare wheel with the spare wheel, obviously.
When done like that, it obviously doesn't take much room. Not a bad idea. :)

Arabs, the masters of desert living and recovery. Always come up with an idea that doesn't need anything fancy. :D

This is a pretty good track grabber tool. Simple and effective.
I reckon we can make them even better by wrapping something rough in the middle to improve the friction.
Something like rags, etc.

A couple of years ago a few of us tested out some recovery gear up at Wilbinga North of Perth. We used this screw in ground anchor http://www.lan-cor.com/lan-cor-in-action Certainly took a bit of effort to get it buried in a dune, but we winched a purposely bogged vehicle up a pretty steep sandhill with it. Good if travelling solo and it only weighed 9kg, bloody expensive though.

Or you can make a simple, more compact pul-pal with a head of a spare shovel, few pieces of metal like this.

All that beautiful welding and he uses a bit of thin plate for the attachment point. Yeah, I would trust my life with that....not.

I'm with you mudnut , also I think his design is a bit shite as well , heaps of strength in main body but where it joins the shovel not so good , as for the beercan bashplate epic fail .

Here they claim that screw type land anchor isn't doing well comparing to pulpal or one of it's clones.

By "attachment point", did you mean the self digging(shovel) part of the anchor?
I was thinking it probably need to be thin enough for it to work properly, 'cos pulpal type self digging anchors are meant for soft sand situations?!
If the ground near the bogged vehicle is hard enough, then screw stick type land anchor or a make shift stick type land anchor might be more practical? What do you reckon?

As for the hole in the shovel for the attachment , unless reinforced both sides it's an accident waiting to happen .

We had no problem anchoring a Pajero with one when we went out on a Paj forum testing day. In fact we bent the handle by being lazy and winching it out of the ground instead of unscrewing it. I'd recommend it for solo desert travel.

When you look at the size of the bag, it's not all that much different from pul-pal in terms of the space it takes in the back of the vehicle.

It's about half the length and weight of the pul-pal? It does take some effort to get in the ground but if you had nothing else to hook up to it will work, and either one of them would be easier than burying a spare!

Yeah.
I'm making my own pul-pal type of anchor.
It's not that hard to make a one.
Solo desert trekking is a risky business, so you need to prepare for all kinda hazards & breakdowns.

Yep - how much crap do you want/need to carry?

Not a whole lot for the "want" part! :)
But, the "need", that's a tricky department to step into. ;) :D

Do I need to carry 100 litres of water? yes
Do I need to carry 100 litres of petrol? yes
Do I need a sat phone? yes
Do I need two spare wheels? yes.
Do I need a spare starter motor, alternator, battery, ignition coil, carby, etc etc? yes.
Do I......

:D
