Is there anyone out there that doesn't have lockers or a winch?
This 4WD caper is a money pit. :)
Buying the truck was not enough, it looks like my accessories are going to cost more than the purchase price.
One Powerball.....and I will do it all at once.

I don't have lockers or winch but we don't have the sort of tracks in SA that they have in Vic so have not needed them.
Planning to do Cape York next year so may get a winch before then.

If only..

My gu was completely stock standard except for the bullbar and winch.
I'm not finished yet, but slowly coming together how I want it. Look at my signature.
All in good time....

Don't have a locker , do have a winch that cost $190 from Aldi , have used and abused it but it won't die .
The remote is better than some other big brands and when remote is switched from wire to remote , no power is at the pins so no one can activate winch with paper clips .
Depending on what 4by you buy depends a certain degree on what mods you need as apposed to what you want or would like .
Suspension , bigger tyres and a 2" lift were my main needs , the rest just got added when I found a bargain or a need .
You can still do a fair bit of four wheeling with a stock GQ or GU .

G'day Mc4by mate, these Patrols have the tuffest /tighest diffs/drivetrains in my opinion. Our family stock early GU truckster easily crawls beyond most cowboy rigs mate :-)

MB has it in one , our limited slip diffs are the best , and if you have an auto you are in front I think .

Whoops, I meant Toyoda, my utes locked up just meant as family stock they're sh#t hot, they will keep up without spending megabucks in my opinion:-)

Whoops again, sorry GQTD same time posting mate, agreed :-) Mc4by bro, we believe there is no need for you to diff lock your beast until adventures permit because your beast is prebuilt better already:-)

I did without a locker and winch for 5 years...... just so happened that the next 4by I bought had a locker already, and the missus bought the winch for fathers day a couple of years ago.......which I just so happened to use the day after it was installed.

So what did you use the winch for, find a Toyota needing assistance?

Nope a GU patrol in a club outing who found themselves in a little bit of a precarious position goin uphill on a slippy track.... I was parked in an above position just in case someone required assistance

Just a late night theory Mc4by mate :-) Gather the recovery knowledge from legends here and get out amongst it. Your Patrol will serve you well, love thy beast :-) !

My ute had a winch when I bought it but as far as I can tell it doesn't work, no remote to plug into the connection on the bull bar and the switch in the cab does f!@# all. My GQ had a factory locker but half the time that didn't work either. I would say neither is a priority for you.

I totally agree the forum is a wealth of good info.
Good lines and a steady right foot seems to get me most places at the moment.
Accessories are plentiful though and very tempting :)

Agreed MB , mine being an auto means I can brake lightly while accelerating which limits wheel spin and gives me plenty of grip , if I won Tatts I would only maybe put lockers on the front anyway .

Spoken like a true expert , taking the right line is everything , throttle control is important , knowing when to use the chicken track can also pay dividends ( not that we usually need to take the Toyota track) .

drove my last 4x4 for 400k maybe the last 50k with front and rear lockers.
Ive driven most tracks in the High country some a few times,
all with no winch or lockers, been bogged a million times but always went
with another 4x4. Had a ball and learnt a lot.

my Patrol has a Warn XP9.5 winch and a rear LSD,
when funds allow a front Pro-locker is going in.
but my back is stopping me atm from doing many tracks.

A locker is a good investment though to tackle difficult terrain without the need for relying on momentum and possible damage to car but it is a luxury that most don't need.

I agree, but I’m gonna get a front e-locker fitted soon, not for ‘hardcore’ rock crawling, more just as outback touring ‘insurance’. It’s all very well for folk to say take the right lines but my 4wd’ing experience is way less than my off road bike experience & I still have much to learn. Once we start travelling full time I expect regular practice to improve my judgement. Not having to rely on momentum & avoiding the potential damage it could cause just seems common sense to me given that we intend to travel alone & want the vehicle to last us for many years of touring. Having fitted a locker I will be very happy if I don’t need to use it, but I can easily imagine , for example, that having one could easily be the difference between towing the Tvan along the Munja track & enjoying ourselves versus a white knuckle ride worrying about damage.

Do the cheap, simple stuff like extending the diff, gear box and transfer case breathers, and you'll be right.
