View Full Version : 1995 Safari Manual Drivetrain clanking issue

Hi, I am new to the forum, but am on my third Patrol. Currently have a 1995 manual non-turbo Patrol.

We have an issue with something in the drivetrain making an awful clunk when going down a steep hill with a load behind. It only happens with a load adding push to the driving, like a heavy tandem trailer or horse float, not when just the Patrol itself is going down the hill.

It sounds to me a bit like the added weight is forcing a cog tooth somewhere to crunch past before it should. Once on level ground again it never reappears, but the wagon makes a strange extra noise form somewhere, a bit like a mechanical buzzing. It can be intermittent and go away but I can't make any sense of it, nor can my mechanic.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this sort of problem: diff? Transfer case? Gearbox? Front hubs? or all of the above? What we want to do is see if there is a way to diagnose without pulling the entire drive train out and opening up everything.

I would be very grateful for any responses or advice.

I have known uni joints to make all sorts of wierd noises including buzzing when worn. Worth a check I recon.

x2 for the Uni joints

wont be the diff - limited slip - bullet proof, not much will stuff them (no oil, maybe)

maybe front hubs, easy check to see if it is

shouldn't be the gearbox or Transfer, as again, they are bullet proof, unless your driving in 4WD on the bitumen, with wrong oil or no oil in it
