Just so you know I'm doing it tough, today is day 10 without a beer!!! It's not right!!! For those that know me, that is gargantuan ... first time in 27 years I have gone more than a few days without a beer ... and I'm only 38 years old!! lmfao

But I'm sticking with it ... have had no spirits either, and three single glasses of wine over three different nights with dinner!!!

Keep up the good work everyone!!

This had better work!!! LOL

Scotty bless me for I have sinned.

I have tried to be good, honest.

I have eaten only healthy foods (in reduced amounts) and have exercised.

But I just can't seem to give up that demon drink!!!!!

I am fine until Mr Jack Daniels or Mr Johnnie Walker come knocking at my door.

What should I do????????

In all seriousness how are you doing so well?.

Cheers Rodney

Hahaha!!!! Johnny kicked the bejeezers out of me a couple of weeks back, so he's easy to avoid. Jack and I aren't friends from a long time ago, so that only leaves me with my Russian friends these days - Stollichnaya and Eristoff!!! LMFAO!!

I've substituted brown spirits (molasses, sugar) for white spirits (grains). Have it with sugarfree mixer (not coke - avoid the caffeine). Seriously haven't had a drink in 11 days, but vodka and soda, or vodka and diet lemonade are the go when I do want a sip!!! Tomorrow night at a mates as an example - I'll be giving this theory another good work out!!!! lmfao

Stay true to the cause old mate - you can do it!!!

Not totally disappointed with 900gms for the week but could be better. So have upped the ante by doin 20min run followed by 40min gym........well feel like im gunna mcgrunder thatll get another 500gms off hahahaha. But if I keep this routine up which is sustainable as have tredmill and gym here its the mindset i gotta sort. When/if should i have a break day? Should i do cardio every day and then cardio and gym every other or other way round?? Or am i totally off track? Anyways i feel totally buggered now and am gunna go think about cold beer!!

A question from a sponser..
Is there a time limit on this ? The reason I ask is that I am sponsoring 2 ppl, and if they lose like 25kg each, and at $5 a kilo, I'm up for a bit of money. Soooo, if its over a 6 month period, can I pay someone at 2 month intervals, or even at the half way point ?

Howdy Kat - yeah, was thinking 12 weeks broken into two 6 week blocks. Most programs are between this sort of period, so does that work for you? I'll get the details of the Canteen PayPal account up and you can literally deposit weekly if that makes it easier.

Hey boss

Cardio fitness you can do every day if you like, but certainly not on the weights (unless you're trying to bulk up, and if that's the case, you'll probably end up heavier in the early stages as muscle is heavier than fat - it will start to lean off though as muscle also burns about 5 calories per hour per kilo as opposed to fat which uses about 3 calories per hour per kilo). Definitely swap the muscle groups on a two or three day schedule - that is, if you do biceps, triceps and lats today, then do something like traps, back and chest tomorrow, and quads, hammies and calves the next day before going back to the first muscle set. This allows the muscles fibrils time to actually heal ... you should allow yourself at least one full rest day per week more so that it doesn't become laborious for you and potentially put you off ....

I have to add an extra day to my weigh in, so my loss was over 8 days, but through diet alone (no treadmill due to busted foot and no gym) I dropped 6.5kgs!!! Remember what Rossco said - 80% nutrition and 20% exercise is what will see the best results - then, the lighter you get, the easier the exercise becomes also!!!

I start on the treadmill this week I think, so hopefully I'll have another spunky week of weight loss!!!

Keep it up one and all - it's not easy, but definitely worth it in the long run!!!

Top stuff people!!!

All weigh ins complete for the first week - 13 people, 10 with a weight loss combined of:

20.6kgs

3 with a slight increase total of:

3.3kgs

Let's get behind everyone and help them along!! It's bloody hard to do, so don't give up and try small changes first that suit your lifestyle etc - as per my last post in the weigh in thread, plenty of water - sugarfree flavoring (not much, it still has preservatives etc) to help you get it down, but 1.5-2 litres per day, throughout the day (not in one go) as a minimum - fluid retention is the biggest cause of first/second week weight loss - usually accounting for the majority of the weight recorded.

Keep up the good work one and all, and don't be afraid to PM others you feel comfortable with and talk to them about it - do not see seeking help as a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength of character and will power!!!!

OK, time to 'lighten' this thread up a bit. We all know this is a serious topic that requires a change to lifestyle and committment.

Here's my story.......

I started my alternate lifestyle after a visit to the doctor. I got 'THE' talk about lifestyle and what would happen if I didn't.

Without hesitation, I stopped my life to smell the roses. I had to change because I've had this talk a couple of times before.

Went and saw a dietician and it started from there.

After a few days of eating and exercising 'properly,' My major organs and muscle groups went into shock - just like being hit by a Police taser stun gun at point blank range. lol

Even reaching around after my constitutional felt like every muscle in my body was being ripped from the bone. As I got fitter, I went and saw the Doc again, and he lowered my medication. Yeah!!!!

I'm just chugging along. Somedays I pike out on the exercise and justify myself by saying 80% nutrition 20% exercise - today I'll do the 80% nutrition. lol

I have to be very careful with my digestive system. I love my hot spicy food and only eat it for lunch because I've found out that what starts out as flatulance, doesn't always end as flatulance. Thus the reason my jocks changing to adult 'day nappies' after such treats.

I try to drink plenty of water, but sometimes forget because I get busy and forget - and boy, do I feel it. I generally leave a water bottle on my desk so I force myself to drink. My vice is caffene. When this tin runs out, it'll be decaf - my next challenge.

I've given up weighing myself every morning. As Scotty said, you do put on a few hundred g's occasionally. Digital is too accurate, and I stress about it a bit, but that's another challenge - learning to chill out.

It's been a challenge. I read books and watch DVD's and am sometimes confused with all the info that I peruse, but there's a balance in there - somewhere!

It's hard w...... , but If I've encouraged one person, preferably more, to hang in there, I'm happy for me and them.

Take care and hang in there.

You're a good man Rossco!!

My decision has been a while coming, but as said, my brother started letting himself go a few years back also (5 kids will do that to you!) and ended up having a double heart attack in November last year - he's not in a good way and most likely never will be ... he was 44 at the time ...

All that aside, I'm just sick of having a wardrobe full of clothes that are good quality that I haven't been able to wear for two years!! Time to get back into them I figured!!

It's a balance that most every one struggles with, but with a little will power, a little support and a little self pride, most can get somewhere towards what they'd like, and no doubt that is better than where we are now!

Hoped on the scales after my 6:30 to 8 AM gym session this morning and I have started the weight loss. It was a good feeling. I am not struggling too much with the changes, it'll be just keeping them up when I go to Melbourne to see my family for 5 weeks (constant drinking and partying). I might just have to drive a few times and limit the excessiveness. Ill be ok

First thing I'll say is what I'm about to detail is NOT normal and NOT sustainable ...however ...

I started a 7 day detox thing that I researched and thought I'd throw it into the mix after a very successful first week loss - it is mind numbingly hard and I feel far worse for it than 'cleaned out' and refreshed, but I'm sure that will come later ...if you haven't done a detox, which I never have either until now, then I would thoroughly recommend it (it's one week only at the outset, should NOT be done again whilst on your program, and makes for a week of misery). That all said, I won't post a weight till Monday, but curiosity got the better of me this morning and all I will say is the loss is quite incredible!!! I feel quite drained though, and am finding cravings for sugar (hyperglycemia kicking into overdrive) have been far more overwhelming this week ...

I have one more day of the cleanse to go, and then back to a normal regime tomorrow ... including some simple carbs to keep the blood sugar at bay!

Let's see what Monday brings!!!

Hope everyone is going well!!! Stick to it and we'll get through it!!

By the way - I've had less than a carton of beer in three weeks!!! I was doing a carton at least every 3 days and more over the weekends ... for me personally, I think this accounts literally for 90% of my loss ... heaps less carbs per day.

Moral to the story - if I can do it, anyone can ... I am a glutten for beer, and that has been the hardest thing! Yours might be cordial, softdrink, whatever, but there's bound to be something that can go to make things easier on yourself!

Here is a tip for those trying to lose weight.

CUT OUT SUGAR

I was diagnosed with TYPE2 Diabetes about three years ago and as a result had to reduce my Sugar intake. I stopped Sugar in my Tea & Coffee and also any Foods that contained much Sugar ie Corn Flakes and Cakes.

The Weight just dropped off

Hey growler

Thought I'd post here to keep the other thread 'somewhat' tidy! lol

A loss is a loss mate, some weeks good, some not so good. I had a week of misery to get that much loss, and now I'm pretty much expecting (body has had it's shock therapy) that 0.5-1.5 is about the rate I'll lose - takes longer, but in the long run, much healthier and much mor Le sustainable.

Keep at it champion! And everyone else also!!

You're doing better than me mate - I have done bugger all in the way of exercise, and don't discount you may have added muscle bulk (which is heavier than fat), so even 0.3-0.5 kgs of that would have offset your weigh in ... And that's actually a good thing as you'll burn more calories naturally with muscle growth!!!

Righto - remember I did that detox thing last week? Well, on Saturday morning I weighed in at 113.7kgs!! From Monday to Saturday I lost just shy of another 6kgs and quite seriously felt terrible for it ... BUT ... then I had beers on the weekend, ate like a man possessed (fried rice, chocolate cake, the beers themselves, nuts, maltesers, etc, etc) as we had dhuck and his family here - from Saturday to Monday, I put 1.5kgs back on!! So hard to lose, so easy to gain ... and I'm kicking myself for doing it.

I'm back on the program rigid as of today again, but thought I'd share that piece of information to demonstrate how quickly the wrong lifestyle affects you (both ways).

Keep at it guys and girls - small weekly gains that are sustainable when you finish your program ... that is the key!!

Saw the Doc again the other day,and he's taken me off one tablet completely.

I believe that now, I have to crank up the exercise.

I have athletes legs and arms, but still a middle aged man's overhang around the guts and love handles. lol

If I'm gunna have any more Aussie Rules bets or be a candidate to do shampoo adds on TV, I need to lose my guts and love handles. lol

"Bring back the 6 pack", I say.

Hey All,
Just thought I'd share some advice i had from my doctor :)
Firstly he recommended anyone trying to lose weight should have blood tests, including thyroid, just to rule out any health issues (so am going for my blood tests on sat).
Also, he has highly recommended the CSIRO Wellbeing Diet Book - the only diet book he would ever recommend.
Basically it is pretty flexible, but recommendations are:
- High protein, low fat diet
- Red meat 4 nights a week, fish twice and chicken once.
- 2 fruit servings a day
- 1 high fibre cereal serving a day (weetbix, all bran etc)
- 2 wholemeal servings a day (rice/pasta/potato/bread)
- plenty of veg (almost unlimited)
- high fibre lunch (egg/ham/salmon/corned beef etc with salad in wholemeal bread/roll) or veg soup
- plus only 2 units of alcohol a week (ie 2 glasses of wine)

Thats kinda the key points anyways . . . so after a steady loss of 0.7/0.8Kgs per week over the last 3 weeks, i'll see how i go on this :)

Is anyone else trying a specific weight loss program?
I was surprised by the high protein stuff - i always thought chicken was better for being 'healthy'.
I know a few people who have done Jenny Craig type programs and lost 15-20Kgs in a few months . . . but its not cheap (i think around $100 per week, plus you have to add some stuff to it).

Thanks for the info mate.

Chicken is a high protein meat, but chicken fat is up there with the absolute worst of saturated fats - causing high cholesterol and coronary blockages etc. Fish is great, but sometimes a bit expensive and boring without a nice sauce (which stuffs the purpose of having fish). I take that Fish 'Super Concentrate' (3ml per day) which has about the same intake of omega3 as about 500 grams of fish - a lot of fish!! (omega3 is the stuff your brain is made up of/uses for function).

Vegetables are always high on the agenda, but the problem these days is we tend to boil them, thinking that's the best way to cook them for health. Problem is, cooking leaches a huge amount of the natural nutrients out of the vege's and what you left with is a lot of starch in things like potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, etc. Starch is just a complex sugar and if not burned, will simply be stored for later use as fat.

Losing weight fast like on Jenny Craig is based on 'shocking' the body into action - fast weight loss is NOT healthy nor is it usually sustainable post the completion of a program. Remember, we are all physiologically different - we metabolize differently, we absorb/break down/utilize nutrients and chemicals differently, we have different lifestyles and irrespective of what the literally thousands of diet programs out there suggest, what works for one, may and generally will not work for another. Put it this way - you can google this as its on the web - take biological identical twins (single egg, not paternal twins) who consume the same food, same diet, same exercise routine etc - they both 'may' sustain a nearly identical weight, but one may develop gout from eating tomato and the other doesn't, etc - why? They are 'identical' twins? The reason is even though they are twins (not chimera's either - they are hideously rare and obviously need to be excluded) is all the above - their genetic makeup is essentially the same, but their DNA is not, and even subtle changes (0.00001%) in DNA will affect their physiology. Remember again that we share 98% of the same DNA as rats!!!! So it doesn't take much of a change to completely affect the look, the way we process, etc.

Some people battle weight their whole life - go to a party and watch some skinny bloke plowing through a carton of heavy beer (about 8-11 grams of sugar in each bottle - two to three full teaspoons to make it easier to comprehend), eating cheese and crackers, dips etc whilst you're sitting there thinking I'd be as big as a house if I ate like that. Solely because they process differently. It certainly does NOT mean they ate healthy on the inside (usually quite the contrary), but again, as a western civilization, we have a fixation that "thin is healthy" -- wrong, wrong, wrong!!

You'll have a weight that is right for your build etc and you may find (just like me) that you are going to have to prepare yourself for a life long change of having the occasional (5+ times per week) meal replacement drink etc to keep the weight off. I played A grade and representative rugby league and couldn't get over about 95kilos (fit) when playing, but now have to realise that 95 kilos is a real achievement for me - I stopped playing and went to 125kgs!! I don't want to be that big again, and I don't want to do 20+ hours of intensive training per week either, so there has to be a compromise - and that is diet and lifestyle.

Sorry for the hideously long winded response. Try to find what's right for you - have a look back at some of the earlier posts in this thread for vege's and fruit etc to steer clear of, certainly increase your protein intake, and reduce the fat and carbs wherever you can - don't forget, many type 2 diabetics (my father and I'm sure some people on the forum) are more susceptible to fats than just sugars - both need to be watched and reduced where possible.

For me, I'm a terrible breakfast eater - that is, I don't have it as I'm milk (and soy) protein intolerant. That doesn't mean I don't like them! lol. It means I don't process them and I get physically sick. As I'm not a 'get up and make toast' kind of guy (and that most bread is high in sugars), I simply stopped having brekky - that's bad!!! So now I have a meal replacement shake - the Rapid Loss one - high in protein, still has simple sugars, but low and no fats and heaps of vitamins (I take a multi vitamin also). This is great as I found I used to Hoover late morning and into lunch, but now not feeling overwhelmed by hunger die to having something at breakfast. Due to injury, I have done literally nothing but change my diet through the last 4 weeks, and have lost just over 12kgs!! I am now replacing two meals with supplements, grazing through the day (smaller snacks, more often). I had roast pork with baked vege's last night, so I'm not completely changing my life - it needs to be sustainable and realistic!!!

Good luck with it.

Hi Roofys boss here. Thanks for this info. It gives me more of a diet plan to follow. Will buy the c.s.i.r.o. book as well to follow.

No probs.
There are 2 books:
CSIRO total wellbeing diet
CSIRO total wellbeing diet 2

I have the first one, but think they are both the same idea. Contain info about weight loss, types of food, exercise, meal plans and recipes.

There is also a recipe book - but doesn't have all the other stuff in it.

Highly recommend the fennel crusted pork with parsnip n baked apple!!!! Just had it for dinner! Yummy :)

Good onya Paul. 6kg in 8 weeks.

I keep telling myself.... 80% nutrician, 20% exercise. I did 'a few' exercises last night and I was not a happy chappy. I didn't want to be there!
My reward is seeing those little numbers on the scales dropping and dropping.

I even checked out my new birthday suit in the mirror. I'm impressed. lol

Gotta keep this thread 'running'

True story...... I'm doing reasonably well with this lifestyle change and have lost weight.

I came home from work yesterday and was told by the missus she had gone through my wardrobe and taken all my 'too big clothes' to the op shop. I was left with a couple of shirts and a couple of pairs of 'going out' long pants.

After my initial 'hot flush' of disbelief, she won't tell me which op shop I can retrieve them from.

Anyway, I went through the rest of my wardrobe, and found that I haven't got a wardrobe. There's only about 2 shirts that fit. Even my 2 piece suit is too big!

My sole wardrobe now consists of a pair of jeans and a couple of shirts!

I'm giving away the following, for free.

1 x 2 piece suit - jacket and pants, size 107 - only worn a few times, still brand new condition.
5pr 97 long pants - various shades of brown
1 x pr 102 long pants

Please PM me an address if you want any of these - other wise the missus will put them into the op shop.

You have until Tuesday morning, and the clock starts ticking......now. lol

Just a quick "hello' to encourage you all - including me - to hang in there.

There has been times in my journey where I've fallen off the horse, but got back on, dropped it down a gear, and put the pedal to the metal
- like the other night.

Coz I've cranked up the exercise, I'm getting hungrier. The other night, I ate like a pig and couldn't shovel it in fast enough!
Lucky for me it was still healthy stuff, but it was wayyyyyyyy too much.

I'd like to recommend a book for you to consider. Its called 'the CSIRO and BAKER IDI Diabetes Diet and Lifestyle Plan.'

It costs $35 rrp, and includes over 80 delicious diabetes-friendly recipes for many occasions - including:
- Breakfasts
- Snacks
- Lunches and Light Meals
- Soups and Salads
- Weeknight dinners
- Casual night in with friends
- Dinners on a shoestring
- Weekend Barbecue picnics
- Weekend cooking
- Dinner Party, and;
- Deserts.

I'm making the exception and recommending this book as a very satisfied customer. My missus cooks from these recipes most nights
and doubles the quantities, so we always have good, healthy food in the freezer for those times where we are both doing shift work,
or I need a break from doing the dishes. lol

For over 3 months now, the majority of our meals have come from this book. I can honestly say, I have only eaten from one recipe
that my taste buds didn't like. These recipes are faaaarrr from 'bland' and I look forward to each 'new creation' placed on our table.

Take care out there.

I went to the city on the weekend, visited my youngins and took them to KFC and Red Rooster. Luckily they sold wraps!
I conquered - no fried chicken, no chips, no upsizing, no sauces. Just salad, grilled chicken and a Pepsi Max treat. lol
Stayed off the peace, too. Haven't had a drink in over 3 months now.

Great to see you back on track, and please, no more sports injury photos. I still feel queezy. lol

Thanks for being honest, and what I'm about to say is my journey .....................................

In consultation with my doctor, dietician, diabetes educator, Registered Nurse, podiatrist and opthomologist, (My Care Plan Team), we worked out my program/testing and a lot of blood (BSL testing) sweat (exercise) and tears (shock/horror and sheer determination), I was able to beat Type 2 diabetes in 76 days.
My BSL is around 5.8-6 - now.

I am in remission from a chronic disease (Type 2 diabetes) through diet and exercise. My weight hovers between about 96-97kg. Not as low as I'd like, but I'm more than happy with my achievement (lost about 18-20kg in 6 months).

I credit much of my success to the wife for religiously cooking from the book 'the CSIRO and BAKER IDI Diabetes Diet and Lifestyle Plan'. I've backed off a bit now, but those initial 6 months were critical to my success.

My journey has been no walk in the park, nor smelling the roses along the way. I've had a few chats from doctors about 'pulling my finger out' and doing something about my weight, but I knew this time I HAD to LISTEN. I've halved my BP tablets and completely off diabetic medication. I'm allowed 2 standard alcoholic drinks a day, but my problem is I can't stop at one or two, so I choose not to drink at all.

To quote from the book 'the CSIRO and BAKER IDI Diabetes Diet and Lifestyle Plan'....
'Each day in Australia, 275 people develop type 2 diabetes'

When I read this, it absolutely floored me!!!

I'd strongly recommend everybody consider seeing their doctor for a full, yearly medical check up - starting right now - not tomorrow or next week or next month - especially BEFORE you start any exercise or weight loss. Some procedures may be/are invasive, but what price are you willing to pay for a bit of TEMPORARY discomfort? Hopefully not your life.

The end.

Take care out there.

I also love a drink and same goes i can always convince myself to have just one more so to combat this im trying to be a responsible alcoholic :-) (no not squash if youre reading this Snicko-too much sugar hahah) but only buy 1 or 2 stubbies on the way home. This worked all last week except for Saturday, was a fail. But havent had a drink since. I'll buy one longneck today for the first day of the Adelaide test, be un Australian if didnt :-)!

Was taking 23minutes to do 3km now getting it down to 18m 10sec (used to do 5km in that time when i was 17) aim to get it down to 17min by this time next week. Eating much smaller meals, put em on a little plate to make em look bigger helps, and havent been drinking grog...........well almost one beer or wine if we go out for tea, and 2 heavys and 3 lights at the daughters 2nd bday party hahahhahaha.

2.2 kgs - and I did my normal routine (which involves no running - find running flogs me having had two knee recons, an ankle recon and a broken back ... lucky, coz running bores me anyway!!! lol). Was far more "active" though - walked once to the shops (about 3klms return), did 9 holes of golf walking, and a heap of stuff around the house (fully, and I mean FULLY, opened out and cleaned out every inch of the camper trailer and everything inside, opened all the chairs out for airing, portable beds out, etc, etc and did some labour around the yard ...). Mostly watching what and when I eat, no grog through the week, plenty of water and no junk food whatsoever.

And so it continues ...

Nope, I'm in serious pain!!!! lmao

And there again tonight ... OUCH!!!!

Went for a 3klm walk yesterday as well just to try and loosen up, and the strange thing is, having eaten right all week, virtually no grog (about 4 cans all week) and exercised pretty week, but have shifted no weight??

If anything, I've put weight on?? Not understanding ... normally my first 'true to myself' week back on it I'd shift 3-4 Kgs just in fluid etc alone ...

Must be the muscle bulk building!!! LMFAO

Well bought a new set of scales and compared with the old ones and theres only 200gms difference, so cant blame them anymore hahahahaa but these new ones tell ya fat% and water% muscle% and bone% which is a bit fancy. The good thing is even if ya dont loose much weight wise you can still see if fats dropping off which is good for the mind games that scales play (on my mind any way)

Yeah I got them - might do the same as my weight has gone down a fly poop, but I've trained 3 days this week (got flogged) and have eaten etc pretty well ... that said, my legs must be building up again pretty quick, coz whilst my work pants feel no different around my waist, they are starting already to feel tight on the thighs? I think that you should have to take a lot of care about (http://www.goldcoast-pestcontrol.com/commercial-pest-control/) your diet and must do exercise daily. Make sure that in your diet you have taken balanced diet. And also try to drink green tea or such other extract to make fast your metabolism and it will help you to cut off your extra body fat. The other side you should also do cycling or swimming. Running is also a good way to get effective results. I have lost 5 Kg in 10 days and 20 More to lose.

Nice. Please be careful. 40kg in 6 months is a lot of weight to lose in a short amount of time. This won't be suitable for me because I love my pushbike riding and I need carbs. Low carbs and pushbike riding, IMHO, aren't good friends. Been there done that.

Thanks mate. The doc is happy with what I've done so far and it has brought my blood pressure down which was what made me make the choice to do something about my weight.
I'm down to 95kg, which is the first time I have been under 100kg since I was 16

Winnie, that`s one thing I found too, about bloody pressure being lower once the weight had dropped. I use to walk around 1.5 hours a day once, but now I do any thing around 2.5 to 3 hours a day. Keep up with the good work.

Wow, just found this thread and I shall be subscribing.
Just found out from my doc after 8 vile of blood, chest X-ray and spinal X-ray that I have Metabolic Disease. To beat my spinal column is knackered so as far as exercise goes I am restricted to walking. I have a CT Scan this week so we can see exactly what is going on in the spine so we can see what exercise is suitable (I think that is his plan).
So for now i am needing to lose 20kg by diet alone.
Currently 99kg. He has me aiming for 88kg first, the 78kg.
I am not allowed to eat any carbs, sugar, or any foods high in acids. This may just end me. I like my food.
Doc says: "No Pasta"
Me: "You know I am Italian right?"
Doc: "Wanna live past 50?"
Me: "Cazzo!"
