I thought this morning my start battery had expired so I ripped out the multi meter to check for charge.
Its not charging, so I removed the alternator and noticed the 2 wires that plug into the alternator
were broken. Any ideas how i can repair this I need the patrol going for appointments etc.
NOTE there is not enough wire to "re join" them

I remember mine doing the exact same thing. Same spot too. The wires were flush with the plug. I managed to remove enough of the wire shield and soldered a short length of wire onto the broken off wires in the plug, then soldered the new wires into the loom. I also used liquid electrical tape too in the plug end to seal it up.
It was fiddly but certainly doable.

Happy with the result but Im passing out from the pain Ive inflcted on my self.
Im grabbing a handfull of meds and having a rest, getting too old for this shite,
Got a great price on an AC delco seal start battery to bummer.

Not 100% sure that was the problem so Im swapping out the alternator for a new one.

Get an upgrade alternator from auto 8 , great warranty ( if you keep the receipt) big boost in amps over standard oem.
I'm lucky there based in Wangaratta so I can get one same day .

Sorry just realised you have a GU , just replaced the GU one as well , auto 8 have Bosch units cheap as chips and still good warranty .
I spent $500+ trying to find out what was making fan belt squeal, in the end it was alternator clutch , should have gone to my regular mechanic but he was flooded in at the time .
From memory alternator was around $265 .

$265 was about what I paid, pretty sure it was from Auto8,
no idea what out put will it be on the alternator?

mudski where can I buy some liquid electrical tape.
Im thinking Jaycar yes???
the back of that plug looks exposed so to seal it would help lots
On a good note at least I didnt have to pull half the engine bay out to
remove it

yeah Jaycar sell it, messy stuff and impossible to clean off. I have only used it once and thought id just put it on then cut the excess off and clean it up later!... Good luck with that!
If there is nothing wrong with your Alternator any Auto Elec should be able to put new leads on it for you mate.

Interesting, so your belt squeal was from the Alternator? did you try Soap or Lubricant on the belt? was it a slip noise or a squealing running noise if that makes sense. rusty_nail this might be your trouble bud.

Yeah Jaycar sell it. I love using it. Works really well. Just buy a small tube of it though. It will last forever. When using it, squeeze a little out and give it a good mix up prior to application. Works better this way if you do. It is messy though as Darren has said.

Gotta be extra careful with the liquid tape as it will go off in the tin or tube. Try sealing it in a bag with the air sucked out.

Yeah I had a quite old tube of it and it seemed to have separated in the tube. Id squeeze it out and it would come out clear, then a real thick black substance would come out. A bit of mixing and was all good.

I bought the small can of it and expected the lid to have a brush hanging off it like other adhesives. It was junk. In hindsight I would buy a small disposal brush for the application and throw it away on a job by job basis and I reckon G it would be a great product.

Can anyone spare me 30 mins of their time this morning, seems Ive really hurt myself yesterday.
I'll be unable to put it back together at this stage. I keep falling down ,,,not a good look lol
Oh the reason for all this in the first place was after starting the Patrol my volt meter showed
11.9 volts same at the back of the Alternator, then I noticed the broken wire while I was removjng
the Alt. I might use some 5min araldite on the plug, we'll see.

Years ago we found that 5 minute araldite to be electrically conductive, so make sure you don't have glue connecting the wires together or to earth.

Sorry John,
I'm not too far from your location if I recall correctly, but just discovered the thread.
If you still need a hand, PM me, and I'll drop in.
Cheers

P.S. Just wondering, how on earth the alternator wires get deteriorated like that?!!

You can use, silicone and it has pretty good electrical insulation properties, and it can stay stuck where you apply it for long time, provided you clean the surface with a bit of solvent like petrol, metho or carby cleaner, etc.
