I am looking to fit a 12v fan to my front mounted oil cooler. Space is limited from the face of the existing oil cooler to the inside of the GQ grill at close to 32mm. I can carve out the grill a bit using a Dremel if required. The diameter I am looking for is 200mm x 30mm thick - has anyone got a lead on where to start looking for such a slim fan?

you could look at the 7" or 9" slim line fans they use on top mount intercoolers.
about $50 so wont break the bank, the 30mm bit may prove difficult, Ill try
and find a link for you, this one is 56mm.

This one is 40mm so has IMO a good chance of fitting

Thanks TD, have looked at all these and also on the web without luck - the 7" fan is actually 64mm thick, don't know where you saw 40mm?

Anyway I will keep looking and let the group know if I am successful.

Should've gone to Spec Savers eh , I'll keep looking as well ,,lol

G’day Phil,
Davies Craig slimmest fan is 52mm for their 8’ model.
http://daviescraig.com.au/thermatic-fans
SPAL – Italy/USA slimmest fan is 51.1mm for their 7.5’ model.

Just a wacky idea but SPAL also have these:

In theory you could mount them away from the cooler and plumb towards it with a thin cowling under your required 30mm tight space maybe.
Much like the exhaust cowling on the back of a clothes dryer, just don’t tell the Mrs you stole it :-)

Is it possible to relocate the oil cooler elsewhere so you'll have room
for a fan ??

TD I guess anything is possible, but since I have only just got this beast back, I am resisting changing too many things from BD. If I am really going to get serious the oil cooler would get mounted on the roof under the roofrack, more or less as offroad buggies have theirs mounted. A plenum box would provide the isolation regards leaks if they were to occur, however getting the oil lines up there is a bit of a mission. I have just installed a water spray setup behind the grill, running off a 1.5lpm pump, the tank supply is off my 120l water tank in the vehicle. Its jury rigged and needs finishing, but it should do the trick in lowering temps. The sprays are Nissan windscreen washer jets x 3 doubles, and directed into the radiator, oil cooler and aircon evaporator.

Mark, excellent lateral thinking. I like the blower style and I can easily get a plenum fabricated at work. I have already contacted SPAL and waiting for a reply. I can't see any performance data - maybe its there and I just cant find it, so SPAL can tell me.

Sounds great Phil mate. Might have thought of a flaw though on my "wacky" idea. The "Plenum" would no doubt block highway airflow unless it was designed somehow with directional gills for fast & slow air preference if that makes sense :-(

Terrible sketch and hopefully doesn't confuse any more than above mate :-)

This could work Phil :-)

Most of us do have front end space issues between all types of coolers added on. Imagine a slimline fully self mechanical gravity louvre system that once under say 10kmph reverts to a swing closed switch activating a 3,000+ cfm electric blower hidden away :-)

Yes was thinking the same, however if the fan is either controlled with a temp switch or is on the entire time, the cooling would be achieved. I am going to explore this a bit.

Does the fan have to be in front? The depth of the motor to drive a fan of that size is problematic. Could you run multiple smaller fans?

Turtle_au, the fan need to be to the front of the coil as its sandwiched onto the front of the radiator. The oil cooler is circa 200mm x 200mm. If I could get 4 x 100mm fans like the computer cooling fans that would work, but they need to be robust to take the pounding they will take.

Guys, I have decided on a 100mm dia SPAL fan that will push air thru the oil cooler. I ah going this size because i am in the 'dick around phase' of sorting out a water spray setup to cool the aircon, oil cooler and radiator coils, so the water sprays take up perhaps 50% of the face coverage of the oil cooler. I will post the final pics when i have finished - many parallel optimisation paths happening, so could be a couple of week. Appreciate all the fine input and suggestions.
Phil
