I have replaced all fluids, hoses etc on the GU since I picked it up about 7 weeks ago.
The final thing I want to do is replace the thermostat.
I just got a quote for $220 from NATRAD as it apparently takes 1.6 hrs + the thermostat.
Does this sound correct? Is it something I could do myself?

They are a prick to get to on the 3.0L
1.6 hours probably sounds about right, it's not a hard job just in a tricky to get to spot.

Yeah it is a prick to get too. Theres two bolts facing bacward that you access via the front of the motor near the alternator. Then theres one more bolt roughly half way down the housing.
Very fiddly job. Could be done in less their given time. But they would be allowing for skinned knuckles etc etc.

I will drive around for a while with the full radiator flush and coolant change. Pressure test was good so I will take the chance that the thermo is fine.
Not much info on them being a problem with Patrols.

G'day Macca,
reckon I'd go that way too.
Clean coolant, good hoses etc. etc. and no temp. probs., leave well alone
Luck,
Col

Big run today with some long hills followed by some off road challenges.
Looks like the flush and clean has done the job. Temp gauge didn't move from just under half way.
$220 left in the kitty to go towards some other 'necessary' gadget.

Are you just going by the dash temp gauge?

If your not aware, the standard temp gauge is not a good indicator of actual temp movements.

I have an ultraguage, some others plumb in a water temp gauge. I see temps from 85 to 105 on my external gauge, but the dash gauge Nevers moves.

If your dash gauge is showing movement chances are you have big fluctuation in temps.

I was just going to post exactly what jack180 said. Use the money you have saved for a decent gauge.

O.K. that is disconcerting.

Looks like I found a way to spend my money (agree with you jack180).
I was only going on the gauge movement on the hill before and then after.
I like gauges so it will fit my profile nicely.

the OE dash temp gauge on my 3ltr 04 auto shows just below half when it boils.
so I have since fitted an after market red digital water temp gauge.
