Bought this 96 Terrano TD27ETi, 208K ks . It was smoking badly Garage had told seller rings needed replacing. I thought at 208 thou. it should only just be run in so i took a chance. Worked out the seals on the turbo were shot and it was spewing oil into the intake. Relaced the turbo and now no smoke at all.
Problem, at just off idle it feels grt, but thats where it all ends from 1500 to 2000 revs on theres just nothing. From specs 0 to 100ks should be about 16 to 18 seconds this thing does 0 to 100 in around 30 sec. with a top speed of 115ks, prob 120 on a long straight. Its not starving for fuel, changed filter , cleaned small filter under IP banjo, fitted an extra electric fuel pump just before main filter. Its getting all the fuel it needs [Im only getting 400ks to a full tank, 80ltrs ] If anything TOO much fuel but no smoke at all.
Fitted a boost guage on the turbo ,seems fine ,im getting around 11psi boost.
Im thinking it must be somthing to do with timing, starts fine so maybe theres no advance happening. bought a dial indicator and made up a timing tool [to reverse the action and get indicator away from injection lines] . At the moment im waiting for a code reader to come from ebay and read codes before starting to meddel with timing.
Any ideas please.
Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,

This is a dedicated Nissan Patrol forum and while our great members will help if they can you might find that this would be better posted on a forum like http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/

Dave, I once had a similar problem with a Kia truck. Turned out to be injector pump timing was out. I'm no exper6 and thats all I've got, good luck.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Simple solution is to buy a Patrol:) Seriously though, maybe nissannewby could let you know what's up with it.

Air or fuel.

Changed any of the filters?

Air or fuel.

Changed any of the filters?

Changed fuel filter, little filter under banjo on IP [ missing ], pump on top of filter hard as a rock when engine running, after that added electric fuel pump before main filter.
Getting all the fuel it needs, drinking fuel at 5ks to the ltr [ using twice the fuel it should ]
Carefully cleaned MAF, tried running with MAF unplugged, yes its working.
Changed air filter
replaced turbo, fitted boost guage ,11psi boost
blocked EGR and removed butterfly.
Checked engine codes 13 and 55, nothing seems relevant.
From idle to just off idle seems normal, then guttless.
New injectors just before i bought it , not sure which one but one injector is noisy, tick tick tick
Auto trans seems to change at all the right revs, and kicks down if i accelerate [even a little ]
At idle the revs will often change, hunt/surge or just be a bit high.

Been tinkering ,head sratching and constantly searching Google, im frustrated as hell and against my will turning into a real grump. PLEASE HELP

And its like that all the time? From dead cold to operating temp?

It is sounding fuel related.
Where are you located?

Hi Thanks for yr reply nissannewbuy, I live at Lyndoch SA 5351
Fuel related? Im no expert but I thought I had that covered ? apart from maybe the "valve" just before the return line, not sure but I believe that restricts the return and maintains some pressure needed for regulating timing advance?
And because of the very poor econemy, I assumed its getting ample fuel,,,, not sure about starving causing incomplete combustion etc?

Is there a wire on no1 injector?

So there was nothing under the inlet to the injector pump?

Yes it happens all the time, cold or hot
It is an electronic controlled IP, not sure but i think VP44, again not sure but i think Zexell not Bosch [ MAF is HIatchi ]
Nothing coming from inlet to IP, like vacum hose
Feel V unsure of myself when working on electronics, but this morning i did a couple of tests
Crank pos. sensor should have resistance of 900 ohms ,, test near enough
Timing control valve should have resistance of aprox 15 ohms,, test 1100 ohms. Prick of a thing to get at but i will try to wriggle connections, I can see it with a mirror but F%$#ed if i can get my fingers to it.
The car is a limited edition 96 R3mr R50 Aero TD27ETi , The manuals that i have been able to get hold of have different color codings on wiring etc, make thing V confusing.

Its an electronic VE pump not a VP44.

Will it free rev to redline?

It sounds like you might be on the right track. Are you sure those codes were right?

I don't know anything about a Terrano but for a Patrol - if your maximum boost was 11 psi - that would be low. When you replaced the turbo did you set up the actuator (on a ZD30 it's a vacuum control) to any sort of specifications?

THANKS AGAIN FOR REPLYS,,MUCH APPRECIATED

first shifted auto trans from Drive to second so it would peack revs without changing,,,,,, flatened it and eventually it peeked just on red line 4600
Stoped put in neutral ,flatened it and it quickly went to 5k,, lifted my foot as reflex seeing it hit red line,, i recon if I had kept my foot down it would have hit 6k
?????????
A friend needed an old trailer moved,, Good Test,, Took off in first [Auto ] ,It got to about 2k ,,,, and thats where we stayed, flat,,, lucky he only needed it shifted around his property. If I was on beach sand I doudt if it would have spun the wheels.
11 psi boost, using twice as much fuel as it should and NO smoke.

Turbo boost seems to rise fairly smoothly as revs rise,so if its not set properly set its only at the upper limits its going to "dump" when it should not, I havnt played around with that actuator setting. I prob will but that seems sort of "fine" tuning at this stage.

OK last test was early morning done after 2 or 3 ks warm up. Today [hot day, and after 10 or more ks ] did same hold in 2nd and plant it.
Revs slowly rose to max at 4,200 boost rising at the same rate then as i continued to hold flat the boost started to fall down to about 2psi then revs dropped back to around 3,000 and boost began to rise a bit and revs went back to 4,000 then boost dropped and so did revs.... the cycle kept repeating.
In nuetral and flat it went just up to red line 4,600, when i got home the engine was overheating.
Now im wondering if its a blocked exhaust.

Just disconnected exhaust before 1st silencer, went for a drive no change.
