Optimum running temps

Hi guys,
The previous owner installed an after market digital temp gauge on my 88 Maverick. It shows any where from 75 (normal driving nothing strenuous) up to 88 (up hill 32degree day and a bit of gear in the back) I'm just wondering what would be a max temp that I should be worried about? We are doing a trip up to Cervantes next month and will be fully loaded.

G'day Easy, those temps mentioned sound great to me, others can comment here....:-)
My only concern ever is where do folks insert their aftermarket sensors and is it true. Hopefully some 88 Vintage blokes will be along soon mate!

I currently have my after market sensors clamped onto the bottom sides of the outer surface of the top and bottom radiator hoses where they meet the radiator, so metal to metal contact and a buffed up contact surface.. Ultimately if you want the most accurate reading you need direct contact of a very good resistance free transfer surface or better still full contact with the water.. My set-up is a short term compromise, and eventually i intend to cut the hoses and install the temp insert tubes where you can bolt the sensor onto the metal surface with a cleaner/flatter contact than what I have now. If I wanted a more accurate reading i would go with a direct contact RTD, but thats a bit overboard for what I am looking for.

Friday before Christmas warm day enough so to have air con on all day. 1208 klm from MNC NSW to Yarragon VIC via Monaro Highway.

Max temp was 90 deg C, sat on 60ish normally.
We have a 6klm climb into the Barrington / Great Dividing Range it gets hot going up there in 2nd. A hot day will show 105 deg C hence the gear selection.

Not sure about your engine the sensor is fitted to the thermostat housing in ours.
There is a spare port with a screw in bung that worked really well for us.

My motor, same as Macca’s, with identical placement of coolant temp sensor shows between 80 & 90 depending upon ambient temps. Highest I’ve seen it was 95, travelling uphill, loaded & towing the Tvan....... dropped back to 90 on the next downhill section.

60-ish normally is bloody cool. What readiator are you running ?

The old zd is 89-91.
Had it to 93 the other day in 40+ temps.

Pretty sure the thermostat in the td is 89c.
So I would assume that is the optimum.
60 degrees I'd be looking at a stuck open thermostat or not installed at all..

It has a larger aluminum radiator you have me concerned now.

Yeah it does sound a bit cool. I'd check the thermostat because it should be staying closed so it operates warmer than that.

6 days from Moe to Mt Buller to Eaglevale to Omeo toTom Groggin the Alpine Way and now at Blackheath.
Lowest running temp 68 up out of Moe in drizzle. (about similar or a couple of degrees warmer driving round home at 50 / 60 k's)
Worst climb on warm day 108... very nervous.
Hume Highway 110kph ok day 76 degrees.
