Hi
I'm just wondering if anyone has disabled their swirl butterfly on the intake manifold .
I was reading how it is possible to do so on the zd30 in a navara .
Are they the same engine ?

They are vacuum controlled. Just disconnect the vac hose to the actuator and it will stay open. There is two actuators there, one is the swirl and the other is to assist in shut down. To be honest, you will gain next to no benefit in my opinion in removing the butterfly. But each to their own.

Unless your swirl is fouled by EGR gunk, correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't it beneficial to the motor? I mean after all it creates a "swirl", or air turbulence at certain engine speeds doesn't it? This is meant to somehow aid the intake.

I was reading on a Navara forum ,that by having the butterfly open all the time it let more air into the engine at lower revs .
Thus loosing the doughiness down low in the rev range .
I hope that explained the reason I'm asking if it can be done .

Did it to mine too. Like Mudski said, just pull the vac line and block it off. For the same reasoning, to help at low revs. Did it help? Dunno. But didn't make things worse and cost nothing to do :) Lets face it, the ZD is a good lil donk but because Nissan didn't set her up right she needs a bit of help :)

Yeah it may. Have you blocked the egr? As i said. Just remove the vac line to the actuator on the swirl butterfly. This will leave it open. Well it does on the patrols....

Yes I have blocked the egr .
Will give it a go , now just need a new ic as the one I have is leaking like a sieve .
I have the boost reading before the ic and I have nearly 20 psi but its not throwing a fault code ,
so it must be leaking a bit .

A quick explanation of swirl control; http://gmauthority.com/blog/2013/08/2014-chevy-cruze-diesel-variable-swirl-intake-manifold-aids-in-performance/.

There were some pics of bungs that are made for when the swirl flap is completely removed too.

Digging this up again, i see that some people say to leave the swirl flap as it will aid with fuel economy. Curious if anyone has done a before & after test to prove they lost economy after doing this?

See plenty of people saying that they gained a bit of low end pick up off idle/low revs after stopping its function/removing it (obviously hard to quantify without back to back dyno testing) but no reports of worse fuel economy after.

You have more luck with this.

Seriously. Don’t bother. But if you really want to do it. Just disconnect the vac hose to the actuator. Then the butteryfly will stay open.
