Hi guys,

Can you please help me with some advice on suitable better performing spark plugs for
my GQ RB30 carby model? It's NA & dual fuel, but mostly running on LPG unless in outback where
I can't get LPG or LPG is too expensive.

I'm open to the idea of running two separate set of spark plugs for each fuel type, if necessary or if it makes sense.

I've been looking at below iridium spark plugs & wondering if it suits mine.(either for LPG, or petrol or both).

Also below genuine ones from PatrolPart.

Below is Bosch Platinum, a good deal by the looks of it.

Gunson Colortune :) *LMAO*

I'd probably go Bosch at that price... bargain

I guess it wouldn't matter what you go with ( within reason ) if they arn't gapped correctly you will have issues, would gap them for LPG considering thats what you mainly use.

Having 2 sets one for lpg and one for petrol would be a pitta but I guess if you only swapped them when out bush it wouldn't be 2 bad.

Whats the patrol tuned for?

what ever stock is you'll need a higher number making it a hotter plug.
Difficult being dual fuel, but youll need to run on petrol or it'll dry out
the carby

atually the other way mate, the higher the number the cooler the plug. but yes one number higher generally for gas.

personally i like iridium plugs, since fitting them to my turbo tb42e(same heat range as stock) it has much much better resistance to pinging

ATM, it's tuned for nothing, but I would say for LPG.
I seem to have ignition system issues, along with carby issues.
Both need sorting out soon.

I can manage with 2 sets of plugs, as long as I know how to tweak the ignition & carby for them.
I'm getting an AFR gauge, so hopefully I should be able to do it in flash, ideally. :icon_bonk:
Swapping them over won't be an issue 'cos it will be only when I need to drive on petrol in somewhere in the outback.

Come to think of it, I wonder why they haven't come up with normal type colortune spark plugs so we can see what's happening inside the combustion chamber all the time. ;)

NGK BKR6E is the one recommended for RB30 Patrol.
So, for LPG I should go for BKR7E?

Engine's' not running right now at all. I can't get it started with either of the carbies which indicates now it's not the carby.
Current plugs have tell tale signs of running pretty lean(on petrol), even though I don't think that's the case with LPG.
Plug gap is set to 0.8mm(factory specs).
Plugs have whitish residue build up on the tips(while running on the lean issue carby with petrol, 'cos the other carby has rich running issue with petrol, both on idling, throttle opened lean & rich issues appeared improving).

I did a compression test and all cylinders came out 180 except the third one which came out as 190, which I suspect as a result of
soot buildup on the pistons from the rich idling running carby.

Right now I can't get the engine to start on either fuel.
I have a feeling this might have something to do with the compression test, 'cos the it was after that I couldn't get it started.
I get sort of backfire(or loud hiss from the carby when I crank).

Ignition leads came out with good reading. Spark plugs are around 4000 ohm range.
Ignition coil read 0.8 ohm on primary & 11.8 kohm on secondary, so I reckon it's fine.
Spark comes out fine and plugs do spark good enough by the looks of it.
Fuel is getting into the carby.
So, I've got no idea what's going on, yet.

The dizzy looked bad yesterday, so I swapped it over to the good original one.

Valve timing is good. No dramas with the timing belt.
Dizzy is properly placed on TDC spot with number 1 cylinder.

Ignition timing was way off yesterday when I checked the timing. It was about 20 degrees advance.
That came out as a surprise, 'cos I thought it was lot less than that.

I've got it sorted out. A silly mistake of getting the correct side of the rotor tip mixed up.
