Hi Guys. I pulled my intercooler off today to discover a nice amount of oil residue. I want to give it a good clean but not sure which is the best method.

Can I use degreaser then clean out with a bottle of methylated spirits?

Do I use Kerosene then rinse with metho?

I don't really want to use water to rinse as i'm afraid of it not being 100% dry in time.

Any advise welcome!

Kero or petrol is fine give it a good shake around the leave it to dry out in the sun, if you are fussy them metho is ok too same deal dry thoroughly

Thanks Stropp . I should have also asked when having it off and i fill with kerosene, can i determine if there are any leaks by seeing if the liquid escapes anywhere?

Depending on the leak I suppose. If there is one. If you fill it to the brim and there is a leak I would assume you would see it. regardless of the hole size. Pressurising it would force any of the liquid to come out, which would be a surety, if there was any holes.

Tape off both ends and pump some air into it will not need much and dip in water
All OE intercoolers leak if it looked oily it was leaking. have not heard of one that
doesnt, dry throughly with hair dryer before fitting it.

Kinda agree with TD... I have yet to see one that doesn't.
Maybe off the floor they don't but doesn't seem to take long for leaks to develop.

Not that smaller leaks matter all that much, it takes a sizeable leak before the VNT can't keep up

Wow, is about all I can say.

Out of about 30 or 40 ZD30's in the Club over the years I have yet to see one that doesn't leak.
Mine was leaking when I bought it at 40K and Nissan replaced it at 120 K just before the warranty ran out and it was leaking when I sold it another 40K later

I reckon it's like anything on any form of forum or social media , you only ever hear when people have issues never the good side of things , people who never have issues rarely speak up ...

If it were leaking wouldn't it be evident on the outside of the intercooler? Sorry I'm not mechanic. Mine had fair bit of oil when i removed the pipe to access the egr (crd).

I just thought I'd add. Can anyone recommend a good Patrol mechanic on Fraser Coast region?

Yeah, the signs are a dirty residue in the corners where the core attaches to the plenum

BY the way mate, the oil can run along and down the motor and look like a leak from the sump, which is wat mine did. It was only when I took the covers off and got the old cleaner and rag out that I could see what was going on.
