very close to buying 89 patrol, 350000s, current owner can't recall replacing timing gear, is this a major concern? i know these vehicles are tough, but..... and what sort of $$ would i be looking at.

If its an RB30, or RD28, then the timing belt should be done at regular intervals. The TDs have gears and TBs have timing chains.

Considering the built year, I guess there's high probability it is a TB42 carby?

possibly but I've learnt never to make assumptions........ could have been a TD42 but they use gears

I've just learned something new and looked at the exploded view of the TD 42. First post amended.
