Went looking for a UHF. Too many options and prices.
I just need it for the basics and was wondering what sort of radio's are used by members.

ICOM440 is the best in teh business. Military spec. Second to none.

Cheers TD, you mentioned the same advice for my quandary up last Licola trip. I'm sold if coin can permit. What roughly are they worth mate?Anything is better than my current system soon to be seasonally cut off !

I have one in my GQ and my GUIV. I got one of them from Repco during a 25% off sale and save a heap. If your a member of RACV then Repco do 30% off sales for members often. Make sure they have one on teh shelf and score a bargain.

It looks like the new model is out and it's teh ICOM 450. $329 on eBay with smart receiver so the controls are in teh handpiece. Great radio

$329 on EBay for the win. You can get one with an Aerial for about $400

Any aerial size suggestions mate for ruggedness and versatility mate. I'm generally within mountainous country but sometimes have to run over the open field's for work.

3db gain for mountainous terrain, up to 9db gain for flat terrain is my understanding. I bought both 3db and 9db gain whips interchangeable for different terrains.

I really like these images.

I run a 3db on day trips on the GQ. I have a 6db on the front of the GUIV. A 4.5 would be a very good compromise.

You can get a combo kit with 2 whips that gives you both options. Work great.

orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr if you were really lazy and didnt want to change the whips, you could get a couple of antennas and use a switch like THIS (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-Way-CB-Antenna-Mini-Switch-PL259-connectors-Suit-5-Watt-CB-60CM-patch-lead-/371773872194?hash=item568f731842:g:yTEAAOSwFV9Xy84 W) to toggle between them

I did see somewhere a UHF that can use two different dbi spec antennas at once. Came in a kit with a 3 and also a 6dbi antenna. I think it was Oricom. I need my AAA rechargeable batteries too MB next time I see ya! I forgot to ask you or AB when I saw you guys last. Lol.

X 2. Mine has done around 100k on rough and tough tracks and not been a problem I have seen lots that break from too many corrugations and vibrations of the bullbar.

Out of the GME range you'd want the shorter one its about 400mm long,
The shorter will "skip" better in the mountains
and still ok for convoy comms.
