as a rehash i have a 4.2td auto y61 import from Japan (does have ABS)
The other day i had to stop suddenly and to say the least the brakes were less than impressive
so.....
we have fitted stainless flexi's
checked all vacuum lines
and replaced entire brake fluid
all callipers working ok

does any one have any other ideas

going off at a tangent i do have a hydro boost brake system in the shed - cam you fit such a system to a ABS vehicle?

hope thats something of a challenge

Regards Tim

I assume you can fit the hydro setup to ABS??? I upgraded my brakes, using the 4.8 calipers, discs and master cylinder. Along with rebuilding these calipers and also the rears, I have the braided lines aswell. Now my Patrol stops. The discs are only 10mm larger in diameter than what you have, but the bore size of the master cylinder and the calipers are larger aswell. Using OEM pads too....

They run a 4 pot caliper on the front don't they?

I can't see why you couldn't run the hydraulic setup with abs? It's still brake fluid in the system.

Heres a pic of the two caliper pistons side by side... Not a good pic but you can see the size difference. The Master Cylinder is also bigger.

Thanks chaps
the bugger is that the 4.8 wasn't available in the uk
we only ever got the 2.8 early on then the zd30
Am i alone in thinking the brakes are a bit iffy
again my thanks

Have a look at threads here about the LPV. It is often overlooked when servicing and bleeding the brakes. Sometimes this ends up with the valve being stuck and not working properly.

I might have mentioned in my intro (to the site) that i am a complete retard when it comes to spanners etc
so....
what is an LPV
I am guessing L---- proportioning valve
let me know and I'll get a grown up to check
but i will do a search on LPV in the mean time

Load Proportioning Valve.
Located above the rear diff, it has a mechanical connection to the diff that adjusts the amount of braking to the rear brakes in relation to load (or compression of springs )
There is a bleed nipple on top of it.
In our leafy spring utes the slave cylinder design traps air and takes some inventive mechanical work to clear the air from them.
