G'day, all. My Old Trol build is progressing at a snails pace, but it is coming together.

The RB30 sump hangs quite low and is vulnerable to being punctured.

After watching Nessie's video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcyQ-9emJy0 if wish to fit a guard.

I have tried a couple of searches for information on how to build a sump guard but have had no luck.

Has anyone built or bought a guard for their RB30?

If you have access to a welder and a hammer, I'm guessing it's a matter of bit of panel beating??!!! :)

BTW, I thought a diff guard is more critical for RB30 Patrol, or am I wrong about that?!

I started fabricating a diff guard for the front and rear diffs, but never finished it.
Now, following your idea, I'm wondering whether a sump guard is more of a priority?!!

As I am still running 31' tyres, my ultimate plan is to get both diffs shaved and reinforced.

I have wanted to build rock sliders and under body protection, mainly a sump guard as soon as I got the Patrol, but my budget has not extended that far. As I wrote, Nessies video gave me a nudge to do something.

I think the sump pans hang so far down to create a well of oil, even on steep terrain, so chopping the sump and raising it or fitting a Skyline or Commodore sump would result in a seized engine.

I'm not sure about "shaving" the diff.
Won't we compromise some of the structural integrity of the diff housing?
Is the shaving necessary?
I've been thinking along the lines of reinforcing the diff by adding a bracket on each side & then welding a diff guard to that.
Usually diff guards are welded to the diff for off roading.
So, I would imagine we at least fit 33" to prepare for that.
Actually, while ago I was more interested in welding a strengthening brackets to the diff, 'cos I was told
the corrugations on some of the outback tracks can cause the diff housing to crack/bend.
Apparently the accumulative effect of hundreds of miles of corrugated tracks are equivalent of one sudden accident on the diff housing.

I didn't realize that! The oil sump is deeper in the RB30 Patrol, comparing to VLs & Skylines!?
What happens when we do the EFI conversion?
Are all the EFI converted RB30 Patrols swap over the oil sump from the Patrol RB30?!!

BTW, isn't the front diff a tad closer to the ground than the sump?!!
Effectively justifying the diff shave/guard before the sump guard?!

Just watched the video above.
Getting stuck in mud that deep, is definitely not my thing. :D
Getting bogged in the beach sand is a bit more fun I reckon.. or may be not so. :)

Yeah, bog holes are not my thing either, but there has been the odd occasion where turning around is not an option.

Here is a comparison between sumps.

With the shaving of the diffs, I did state I would want to reinforce the housing anyway.

I have no idea where to attach a sump guard either.

Used and abused my rig in the bush for 3 years now, never had an issue with things hitting the sump. As the diff sits lower, it will cop anything. Only issue would be if a stick or similar gets wedged in between, but in over 11 years of offroading in multiple vehicles, I'm yet to have that happen.

As for the shaved diffs, it's becoming more commonplace. I believe Bidders in Cranbourne do a good job, around the $700 mark if you just take the empty housings to them.

I know a couple of people that run shaved housings daily and haven't had any issues, but only had them about a year or two. I'd love to do mine, my 35's would basically be 37's or so, or I could go back to 33's with the clearance of the 35's and not have to worry about the plods. All $$$ though, and the minister of finance isn't keen on me spending any more on it.

There you go bigguwesty a good side line for you. Shaved and braced diffs.

Where does the Tie rod sit in relation to the pumpkin.
I think if you shave the diff you'll be exposing the rod to more..

As for sump gaurd mudnut throw us a sump and I'll brace it for you.
4mm should be enough..

I will have a look at the tie rod. Thank you for the offer of welding a plate, but I was thinking of a stand alone guard that used brackets so as not to apply load to the sump.

No worries.

Your offer has given me an idea, Kallen. As a simple solution for an interim measure, I think using a pad of thick silicon to glue a plate to the sump could offer some protection.

bigguwesty this pic shows there is a few inches available on the front diff, after it is shaved and braced, to protect the tie rod.

I could cut a plate out to give clearance for the drain plug on the sump.

Not sure it'll hold mate.
The heat of hot oil and expansion of sump against the cold wind and the heavy plate..
Not something you want falling off down the highway..

That's the front stabiliser.
