Oil Leaking from where the ZD30 Di Engine meets the Automatic Gearbox.

Hey guys I have recently bought a 3.0L GU3 Patrol and I'm semi mechanicly minded , i was coming home from a 5 hour drive and found the engine leaking a lot of Oil, so I cleaned it when degreaser and found it's leaking out of a small square hole underneath where the Engine meets the gearbox. My question is. Does that mean it would be leaking from inside the engine or could it be just a simple gasket from somewhere else on the engine that could be dripping down to the hole. Any ideas or questions would help thanks guys.

Sounds like a big job is it easy to do im pretty good with mechanical stuff or should i really leave it to a professional?

I know how to drop a gearbox and will have plenty of hands to help get it out but is there Big Issues i should know?

Dropping a gearbox is the hardest part. Especially with no hoist and on the garage floor. Done it myself once and never will I do it again. We used an engine crane going in the passenger from side and down into the transmission tunnel. This is something I'd rather pay someone to do. Sump needs to come off too... Any decent mechanic can do this in a day. If they dedicate their whole time to it. So expect a minimum 8 - 9 hours of labour charge. If you want to work out labour costs....

Yeh Mudski is on the money, I had to replace mine about 6 months back. I shopped around for prices, they varied from $900 - $1500 from memory, but the majority of the actual cost involved is for the labour. The gasket seal itself only cost a few bucks!!

Crap, I have to do mine as well. Looks like not much change from a $1000 at best.

I've done autos in cars in the pass, but never a 4x4 and I'm going to keep it like that.

I would have a crack at it myself. With an engine crane &/or transmission jack assembly attached to a trolley jack should get the job done. It's a back breaking job for sure, and would need some assistance from a mate or two.
To create enough ground clearance, I would use tree trunk cut offs.
Two to three day job, while attending other daily jobs.
You definitely need access to a concreted floor though. Typical garage with enough height or outdoor concreted floor will do.
And if the vehicle is not the daily commuter, then you can do it slowly while taking it easy.
If not, then it's probably better to drop it to the mechanic & get it done it done in a day or so.

Sometimes, you don't save money by doing a DIY, but can end up gathering tools & experience, provided there's enough room for the tools. :)
