My RD28 patrol has been acting up a bit recently, it cranks for a long time before starting, if i glow it 4 or 5 times (turn on to glow, off, wait for the click then glow again) it will start fairly well as long as it is not at operating temperatures, when hot it struggles no matter what.. I checked the plugs, i could only reach 4 of them without taking the IC off, 1 of the 4 plugs did not read any volts, does this seem like a sure glow plug issue?

Could be the advance plate in the injector pump. Makes it hard to start when hot. Patrolapart sells heaps of a modifed plate. But also check your basics :)

Shouldn't be the plugs as they're not really needed when the motor is hot (usually). Other things to check are compression, air leak somewhere in the fuel line allowing the injector pump to suck some air, injectors, or the injector pump itself. My patrol (ZD30) is in at United Fuel injection at the moment with the same issues. These are the checks that they are doing, but its looking like the injector pump for me :animierte-smilies-f

I am really hoping that it is not the injector pump, but I am starting to run out of ideas on what else it could be haha, about time to take it in and see whats up I think..

I have noticed that while I am trying to crank it, it will slowly spit out white smoke from the back

A bit left field, but is it possible that the battery or starter motor is faulty and not cranking fast enough. i have had this happen on motors at work but not on a Patrol.

I thought that too, i replaced the battery and the terminals, i do have a new starter motor, about a month and a half old, although its an auto8 brand which seems a bit ebay spec, it was $250, it does seem to crank a little slower than it did when i first bought it, and it seems to speed up a little just before it starts, could that be it? The motor is just too weak?
