The black top was lightened for better economy and more power and was also weakened in the same process best go the silver top is a stronger motor !! According to what I have read !!

Thanks Timbar, yeah I am aware of all that, I just read somewhere the silver top in 94 potentially had that too.

Sir Roofy, nah all good mate, the TD42 is a Solid Engine, solid platform. Silver Top or Black top they are tough as guts.......... They are tuned to 65rwkw out of the factory. The TD42Ti is about 70rwkw and 9psi of boost. With just a Dyno run i have mine tuned to about 92rwkw and 15psi and its done 200,000kms there. good for another 500,000kms there too.
If you look around Facebook you will fine all this chatter about "Kettles" and snapping Cranks. Now we are talking about guys pushing 150rwkw and above or badly tuned, there is a big group of young guys chasing big numbers beyond 200rwkw that are snapping cranks. AB had 200rwkw and a bloody strong engine. if the cause was hydraulic lock from trapped oil then it would have happened at 100rwkw too.
Unfortunately the ZD has a reputation of going bang regardless of its treatment. Don't worry Toyota has exactly the same bloody problem but no-one is talking about it like the ZD.
For a Farm Tractor engine the TD42 is a Beast mate.

This was a between era of a dedicated NA engine and the Pistons and conrods whilst are still strong are somewhat lightened for a dedicated roll out non turbo.
Happy to be questioned on this though?

The pistons were lighter that was about it. Cranks seem to be the same and apart from little end differences rods arent any weaker. I put one together that ran 23psi and just over 200rwhp. it has done about 30,000km without issue.

The ones I have had apart far enough to see have all had the larger spigot on the flywheel end. So more like the T engine.

Little end differences in conrods?
There are 28mm and 30mm gudgeon pins. So obviously the little end (piston end) will be different. This seems to be more of a disassemble to know. Although I think the silvertop maye have 28mm gudgeons and the blacktop and NA have 30mm gudgeons. Ben-e did note some of this is in his engine build thread Im pretty sure.

The easiest was to tell a true silvertop block (if it is dismantled obviously) the ports for the lifters. Silvertops have 25mm lifters, NA blacktop and T have 27mm.
My 96 blacktop had the 30mm gudgeons. The sludged pre Aug 95 blacktop I was offered for replacement of my POS pile of scrap was a silvertop with a black rocker cover. 28mm pins, 25mm lifters.
The article above saying black tops are unsuitable for turboing is nothing but an opinion based on a guess.
Yes. I did crack 3 pistons, 2,4 and 6. All originating from the centre of the swirl chamber, cracking perpendicular to the gudgeon pin. I cannot see the cracks on the under side of the crown. I haven't done a proper crack check though and likely wont. I'll add that I was turning a 30 psi boost gauge pretty much back around to zero,
I didn't strip the motor because of the cracked pistons, it was always going to happen. I just was not surprised when I found them.

Greetings friends!!!
First off, from the bottom of my heart a million thank you's to those who donated money, I really do appreciate the generosity of the people we have here!
I have just scored a low km TD42Ti from an 04 GU long motor off Patrolapart.
Patrolapart have helped me out enormously with this in which I will be putting a little sponsor banner up for them for a period of time to say thanks!
The rest will be going on my house but without you lot I wouldn't have a hope in hell in getting another reliable engine back in my car.
Just waiting on finance to clear and will hopefully pick it up next week for the journey of putting everything back together and getting back on the road again!
I am going to start a new thread to help others as well in putting a TD42T engine into a GQ.
There's a few little differences and things I need to know as well so I'll put up a detailed thread with questions and hopefully others can help out and get this party started!!!
Thank you, you're all awesome and Clunk, you're not a bad bloke either! ;)
