View Full Version : AC Bearing

Gidday, After a very wet & muddy trip to Birdsville, the mechanic has said the AC bearing is buggered in the GU 07. Has said it will be around $900 to replace as he can't find the replacement bearing kit.
Any ideas where we can get them from or is it best to replace the compressor?

If its the idler bearing this can be changed no worries. Idler bearing is common to get full of crud on these. I would be seeing if its this before forking out $$$ on a new compressor. Unless your mechanic is 100% its not the idler bearing. If its the bearing inside the compressor itself. Yeah then a new compressor is in order.

The a/c bearing can be replaced.
I did mine about a year ago. Plenty of info on the web on how to change, not too hard of a job.
Best is to take off the belt and spin the a/c by hand, if noisy thats your problem.
Bearing cost about $30 from memory.
Any good bearing supplier should stock them. I went in with the old one and they matched it up.
I think I still have the part # somewhere.

If you want to give it a Crack I have a brand new bearing here I was going to use, but my compressor clutch has seized onto the shaft so it's a Warrenty job.
You can have it for cost price if ya like.

You did the idler bearing though didn't you John? Not the actual bearing inside the compressor. As to do this the system needs to be degassed and the compressor disassembled. Disregard this if you did the bearing inside the compressor.

I think he is talking off the bearing on the compressor clutch not the internal compressor bearings if they fail it all over for the hole aircond system will need a pull down and flush

Yeah, the one that's behind the clutch. With the belt off you can tell if that bearing is shot or not.

Thanks for all the info, most appreciated. It is the internal compressor bearings - booked in with the mechanic on Friday.
Thanks Westy - will get back to you once we know.

$900 for the internal bearing sounds way too dear. I would've imagined you can get a brand new compressor for that price.
Then you still have to get the system flushed, lubricated and regassed at an A/C shop.

You can get them for that price haha, if we are talking about the bearing behind the clutch then its an easy job all you need is a puller and a press make its easier. or a good hammer. Use the puller to pull the clutch off the front, undo the circlip then pull off the pulley, then press bearing out of pulley go to bearing shop and purchase then reverse install :) Should be $50 max

My clutch bearing was $65.
But the actual pump which is being replaced is about $1000.
Genuine is about $1600

It's the internal bearing of the A/C pump, by the sound of it. Bearing behind the clutch shouldn't cost anywhere near $900.
I got the bearing for around $30 from Bearing Wholesalers.

I doubt its the internal bearing as he said it only failed after a muddy and watery trip. Id say he was quoted $900 all up including labor which is nuts but same like to charge haha

Hmmmmm........$900 to replace the A/C clutch bearing sounds like a highway robbery to me. :)

That's how my one died.
I don't think the $900 quote is to replace a clutch bearing. Well I hope not.
Roosim please confirm what your been quoted for.

I hope not as well. Recharge is usually around $200 depending on the place and what else needed to be done.
Replacing clutch bearing wasn't that hard(at least in my RB30).

The RB30 compressors are a bit easier to do but I'm talking like only 5 min shorter haha. Speaking of a/c tho i have to order some compressor output adapters. making my own a/c lines for the troll as the factory ones get in the way of my new turbo/ battery/ cooler.

Sorry bit slow on the reply but after a bit of mucking about the compressor was replaced, system regassed etc. The mechanic took the unit to a local auto air mob and the call was to replace the unit, cost $900.
They did have the benefit of all the feedback from you guys as well.
They have always seemed to have done the right thing for me and a couple of others I work with...
