hey mate,

Great photos, i just sat here for the last hour and a half looking at your pics/skills in absolute awe. They are stunning.

I actually have a massive RC car, its more like a scaled real car as opposed to the racers in your pics.
My RC car has the best of both worlds, rock crawling capability and astonishing speed to get those nice action shots. AND it wasn't $1300.

I don't find it always a particular problem for me mate, well, no more than the barrel distortion, lense flare and vignetting , still love shooting with the wide angle anyway ! :p

Plus for the move to full frame i need to replace some lenses, so it will just have to wait (hope this year i can move up), then i will also switch to hosting pics on Flicker so they should look a bit cleaner as well.

I actually like it like that Fracster, its exactly why i bought that lens in the first place, the main thing for me is there is cloud at the top of the shot , normally id have gone for more "colour" in the clouds, but I was on a moving boat at the time, they had $10 all you could drink, so i was quite smashed when i took that one :trink13:

Feel free copy and cut the image yourself and play around with it to how you like it (then please post image here), i think i know where you are coming from and be interested to see, but i also have a feeling, you may find in doing what you suggest, will not only change the original aspect ratio (or lose the reflection on the water) + goes against the rule of thirds, and may not actually look that pleasing to the eye ?

There is a joke there somewhere about QLD sunshine and you living with grey sky in the UK, (sorry i used to live in Coventry,West Midlands, could't help myself, lol)

Yes ,a CPL is used, but no Photoshop, i use a wide angle lens (low ISO), a Circular Polariser, plus i add Saturation and a bit of contrast in the camera shoot settings, the water actually looks like Pepsi Max (yes black), this adds even extra depth to the blue reflection from the sky.

Plus it is really Blue ;)

You need a tripod and set camera to a long exposure, then use a torch to light the car, then run over and flick the head lights on etc, a bit of compositon and a nice background helps, of course the full moon aids with lighting.

Thanks Timmo, to be honest, there was a better shot to be had in this location, but i soon left after taking about 2 pics, only because i slipped over on that green algae you see on the rocks ,i fell awkward as i had camera gear in both hands, and smashed my knee and left hand in the fall.

After this, i lost all interest in favour of drinking beer, but id saved all the gear from any damage so its all good :p

I know, i know, like ive said before, i rarely head out anywhere to "just" take pics, more often i see something while im out, and decide to shoot.

This day was honestly the best sky ive ever seen since owning a camera, even i was in ore, it had dark and light blues, white, yellow and pink colour clouds, sunshine rays, plus grey clouds with falling rain and even had a rainbow !

I was spewin i forgot the camera all the way home (lol)

I forgot to add, that apart from small cropping on 1,2&3, these are all 100% as they came from the camera, not adjusted in any way (just resized for upload)

I am only writing this, as the rock on the RH side in the last pic looks a bit "added", even to me (and I took the pic), its the way it was lit front and rear with different types of lights that give it that black outline effect, all done in real time during shooting.

Of course you can mate, you are always welcome to comment (good or bad), plus you are the "bird master" after all

From memory, It is actually a pretty good representation of the lighting that day, if you look close, you may notice there is no shadow on the bird, or sunlight glistening of any part of the water, I just cropped/resized it ,and whacked it on the net.

That pic was taken hand held, with a slow zoom lens (on full zoom), and on a overcast part of the day, I was passing in the car when I spotted the Sea Eagle near the beach, and they don't hang around long, so im happy to of got that shot to be honest.

Coming from the UK, Im sure you shoot in overcast conditions all the time (and get great shots), normally I don't even get the camera out of the bag when its cloudy, I think i just don't have your patience for animals im afraid, in fact I don't think I like shooting them much at all now I come to think of it, mmm, perhaps if I used a gun to shoot instead of a camera ????

Only one I took from our run up to Bribie on Wednesday, if you look close on the Horizon, just left of the log, you may be able to see a 1/4 rainbow, to the right you can just make out the faint profile of Moreton Island :D

Haha, Yeh the trick is to go slow through the mud (or avoid it altogether ), I was also taking it easy as I was all alone, know one knew where I was, and it was late sunday arvo, and as well as that, last week I hit a slider so hard (on rock) it bent the guard so still licking the wounds so to speak (lol)

Yes correct, although as well as the guard damage last weekend, I also busted a front sway bar link pin in half, so some flex would be gained by the fact the sway bar is not working, ive never had even half that flex at the front before.

Yeh they are strong Troy, it was 100% user error, a long story, but i had 50 psi in the tyres, attempted to climb over some nasty rocks, needed to much speed (due to not letting tyres down) and then mis judged the whole approach (on my 3rd attempt), and landed hard on rock with the very outer edge of the sliders (lots or leverage), wheels in the air, then sliding sideways down the same rock, all in the same action.

When my son showed me the powder coat left on the rock, at first i did not believe i could have got that high, but i did, and without the sliders id have badly ripped the gaurd, sill and drivers door.

looking at what i did, and fact that my car weighs 3 ton, i think the sliders did pretty well.

what are you doing with 50 psi in your tyres? I hope that a typo. 40 and the km2s will sit flat on the road

When i saw the pics my first thought was, if thats with sliders imagine how bad it would of been without them. Should try do a rear side rail now that your bar is done? would some what stop this from happening again

Mine like 45 - 50 psi on the black top, don't forget im running 305s and my car is almost 3000kg as its normally driven around day to day.

Pretty sure the rear side rails are only possible on GQs as the rear door flare gets in the way on GUs ? , I doubt a rear side rail would have helped much in this case anyway Lachlan, the front slider mount is the weak point as it does not clasp the chassis rail like the centre and rear mount/s do, but is bolted to a thinner part of the chassis, this along with the fact that the GU guard hangs much lower than the rest of the sill didn't help.

Sorry dumb moment. For some reason I thought that you damaged the rear, not sure why but that's what my comment was relating too.

As for the front, my sliders never really moved in the front, i believe that yours was a hard hit. Not sure why that could be different?

My patrol is nearly 3000kg daily, well was last time I was at the dump weight bridge, and 40 psi is good for me. How is your tyre wear? That will be the true test. I've got 15k on my km2s (identical to yours) and they seems to be very flat. 40 is also what the tyre shop told me, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

If they pay me to run their tyres I will put the white writing on the
outside until then it stays tucked inside for no one to see.
Black sunnies if need be and black writing, agree 100% about muscle car

40 PSI max IMO regardless of the brand the ride is firm but thats my choice for HWY pressures.
around town so I have a bit of comfort I'll drop to 35 PSI

Yeh was a hard hit , but its where and how it hit that caused the damage, its my first damage to the white bits, my aim was to go 12months before needing body paint so its all good, the black bits are more sacrificial, thats why i left the flares black etc.

Ive done over 20k on my KMs and tread wear is good, (just checked depth across all 4 with a screwdriver) i do rotate them every 5-10k including spare.

Yeh man no probs, "all" the lighting you see is intentional, its very dark down on the beach at night, the rocks needed some form of lighting, so I used a green LED glow stick and you can just see the hint of a blue one, also i used a LED work light, and a low watt conventional yellow bulb torch, sparklers to add some subtle yellow glow, and bright white LED strip lights, as well as the obvious car lights and of course the moon, so yeh everything is 100% intentional and created real time.

As above, its a bit of effort to get something special, but its by far my favourite type of photography.

I have tried lights under the car when I had LED rock lights, im not sure if a single light under the car would give a good spread for effect, and may just give a hot spot under the car with a obvious light source ?

Anyway, easiest way is just to try it dude, because I don't really know, and there is no rules, and no right or wrong, just playing around with different things is the best way to learnt.

It was my understanding from the comps proposal, that in fairness and the spirit of the photo comp thread, i should not enter the comp/s, i have nothing to prove to anyone, plus already have this thread to post my pics, so i am happy to leave it to those that dont get the oppertunity to post pics often, hopefully they can also get some joy and recognition

I don't recall that, I say go for it mate. Very true that U may not need 2 prove anything 2 anyone but there's nothing right or fair about leaving leaving a person out of the comp because they are good at what they do.

How are you taking those night time photos?

No tricks to it really, just use a slow shutter speed and a low F stop number and if you need to a higher ISO, all to get the required light to generate that sort of night image, of course you need to use a tripod as well, the hardest part is framing and focusing the shot when you cant see properly (a torch can help you don't have ambient light as I did) , its good if there is very little wind when shooting trees or you may get a blurred shot (sometimes blur looks really good anyway)

The first night shot (above) was taken at f/3.5, 3.2sec exposure ,ISO 640, no flash etc, the higher ISO lets me use a faster shutter and so reduce blur, if I wanted blur, I would run a lower ISO with a longer shutter speed giving the camera sensor time to capture "movement", whilst still retaining the same overall light for the pic.

The second shot was f/3.5, 1.3sec, ISO 320 , this one had much more light available, so a shorter time was needed, it also had nothing that moved in the wind (trees etc), so I could also reduce the ISO.

Hope that helps ?

Well folks, tas been a long time between drinks, long story short, a relationship break up and related legal mumbo jumbo (and costs), and ive pretty much not gone anywhere or done anything , or taken a single pic since feb :(

So just recently I had a great opportunity to go to China, so I jumped at it, of course I packed the camera, unfortunately for me, the area and period I stayed, encountered the worst recorded weather (for that time of year) than they had seen in the last 50 years, it should have ben blue sky, instead it was overcast and raining, so really bad for taking any pics at all.

Anyway, I was limited on the camera gear I could take, and quite frankly was quite out of practice behind the camera, I was always a bit rushed due to various reasons ,and fumbled around a bit not "really" enjoying myself as much as I normally would.

....but meh (lol)

The mega coloured ones are from the Yuzhu Cave/s Yunnan, they shine various lights around the place to add to the experience, you'll see some "very" interesting naturally formed shapes if you look hard enough.

The others are from the Dragons Gate, carved out of the cliff face by some monk dudes, back when square wheels were still in fashion (nearly 2300M above sea level).

Matty, It was announced over the PA that Ash and Brad had requested only the paid photographer should take pics, something about not wanting random stuff posted on facebook etc (not that im even on facebook)

So yeh, in respect to that request, my camera stayed in the back of the car, shame, as of course i would have liked to take some pics ,i had some cool ideas for some shots , and looking at the lenses the pros used, would have certainly been different additions to what they had

To be honest the pro guys looked like they had it covered well, so letting them do their job unrestricted is always the best option, having someone else in the way, is just a pain in the arse.

My son may have some he took (before the request not to), but as per above, id like to get permission from Ash and Brad before i post them here ...

I don't actually think it is a bike burnout ?

Haha ,yes almost do need the L plates its been that long :tease:

We did go up to the sink hole, pretty much same as the first, (just a bit further down the beach ,toward rainbow) no vehicle access past the sink hole due to trees, and the entire adjacent camp site/s are roped off, but the rest of inskip is business as usual .
