He was actually blocking the pathway in a very narrow alley to the carpark. As I waited for him to move, it seemed like an eternity as he tongue flicked the air and moved off into the garden. Just after the shot was taken the little Chinese chef came out for a handful of herbs and he almost had a crap on the spot as he didn't look down before reaching over the fence and his hand was headed straight for a snappy mouth. I laughed 'til it hurt, eventually he smiled and shuffled away, empty handed.

Looks to be a fair sized specimen. He wont hurt you though. Mind you I had been told that when frightened they'll climb the nearest tall thing, which could be you. We had heaps of the around up on the Dampier peninsula. None ever did that, but would sometimes stand up on their hind legs. We had names for many of them, & one even used to come into the kitchen to be fed now & then. Never felt threatened by them at all.

When I was here 12 yrs ago we had a couple of really large lizards at the mine site that hung around the admin and projects building. despite instructions not to feed them, people did, so when a person came withing say 10m of the lizard it would run straight at them and prop about a meter away - bloody frightening. Finally one went too far and clambered up a womans leg and tore her jeans leg and scratched her, so the enviro's captured them and relocated them to a fair distance away. At the Top camp they lived under the dongas and at 6pm would come out by the dozens looking for food as the crews arrived from the days work, wide range of colours also.

Came across the twin of that one in our vegie garden up here in FNQ just a few days ago. Had never seen anything like it. It is the 'Saunders Case Moth' aka 'Large Bagworm' Initially the caterpillar weaves a bag of silk around it & then adds whatever is around to form a protective case. They retreat into the case to protect themselves & can close the opening at will. It was obvious that they have really good eyesight.

Already plenty of feral ones around, but won't make good pets. Can be seen unmasked, breaking curfews, protesting, baiting cops, chemists and Bunnings workers.
Best kept locked up where they belong.

Yeah, they are a new 'religion', many with 'born again' zeal with all sorts of wacky conspiracy theory ideas mish mashed together. We live in an age where anti science & anti expertise is common, and where knowledge, facts & common sense are replaced with magical thinking which allows these people to believe that believing something makes it a fact. They are dangerous, a serious menace to our communities, but are validated by the rise in their online numbers who spur each other on. Quite alarming how many seemingly 'sensible' people believe the virus is fake & much more besides. Thankfully the vast majority of folk recognise them for what they are, but it doesn't stop them being a danger to us all. They are the gullible, sucked in by all the Q-anon nonsense, believing they are the real informed (woke) & trying to convince everyone else that it is the majority who are the gullible! It won't surprise me if we have some here who may choose to attack me for saying so. In the event that that occurs I wont respond, & they'll be talking to themselves.

No Politics implied nor intended. It's a serious community safety issue.
However I do agree that even mentioning it runs a risk of divisive debate should there be any 'believers' among us, which is why I made it clear I would not be party to ongoing debate.
I do not believe the risk of 'division' should get in the way of mentioning the risk. If we had roving bands of identifiable machine gun toting killers going around killing & maiming I expect we'd all speak out & say it was not on. Saying nothing lends validity. Discussion gives it breath. It's a difficult line to walk. I say that naming the risk (as I have done) is appropriate. But no more - at least not here.
This from the USA says all that is needed

That is probably the tenth time we have gone looking for them this year. We happened upon this pod as soon as we got there. It is luck of the draw. A couple of weeks ago, after ages sitting there, I got cold and went home. The next day, I was talking to a guy who set up in the spot I vacated. He told me that within fifteen minutes of me leaving, he had taken magnificent pics of an orca, just fifty metres offshore.

Truth be known BZ Mate, Rossco is one of Southern Australia’s ‘Bestest’ Commercial Tree Top Climbing LumberJack’s [emoji106][emoji106]
Affectionately known in certain circles as ‘The Skinny Bushman’ due to his appearing adolescence yet a 40YO++ fat free stature and sound knowledge of all things Native Down Under.
Australian ‘Huntsman Spiders’ are near harmless (sometimes nippy) but can be aplenty if you accidentally disturb a nest, possibly why Rossco rightly so may be suffering Arachnophobia behind the bark and or gender dysphoria as a LumberJill but we doubt the later [emoji123][emoji123][emoji23]

A ‘Tough Bushman Concreter’ mate of ours once told of his younger horror story with himself and his Plumber/Bricklayer/Trucker mates and their annual Blokes weekend away lighting their long weekend continuous hoped fire at the base of a dead half standing hardwood tree on our Mighty Murray Border River.
As the story goes, within minutes of ignition, hundreds, if not thousands of the ‘Nippy Huntsman Variants’ flowed out of the hollow stump and sent some of Australia’s most hardened tradesmen squealing into the river for safety.
Car doors all left open back on dry land and our old concreter mate still jumps to this day if you lower your sunscreen visor whilst he is a passenger [emoji887] [emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji887][emoji23]

Mrs mudsane and I went driving along the coast. We watched the Surrey River outflow for a while, then spotted a couple of whales 300 to 400 metres off the beach. They were very active, but the wind was whipping the top off the surf. The resulting mist kept stuffing up the focus, so I only got a few tame pics.

Some may not be aware that whilst Palm Cockatoos are the impressive punk rocker drummers of the Aussie Parrot family they are an increasing rarity & officially endangered with a declining population. They mate for life & only breed when conditions are right, which is less & less thanks to human activities. With this in mind we felt privileged to get a visit from two adults & their young offspring this morning. They had circled around for a bit of a 'reccy' yesterday (Boxing day) morning & we wondered at the time if they were checking out the fruit on the recently flowered Leichardt tree, but no, it was the Beach Almonds they were interested in.

I do have a Pelican case with regularly changed silica gel .......but I fell into the habit of often leaving the camera out 'ready to use'. When I left it in the case inevitably birds had gone by the time I'd pulled it out of the case & assembled the lenses.
The Sigma lens is still good. As are all the lenses.
Camera I have just bought is a full frame Sony A7III. The ASP-C (crop frame sensor) lenses fit it & I'll use them for the time being, but they only use a portion of the full frame sensor, & the effective focal length is shorter, which much of the time wont matter, but the output is only 10 Mp instead of the camera's full capability, so in a pic like above heavy cropping would see the image degraded more. It also means that whilst using crop sensor lenses I can't make use of the full frame's superior low light capability. Problem was , because of the worldwide chip shortage, Sony decided to concentrate on their full frame range & I wasn't able to source another A6500/6600 & needed a camera here which could use the lenses I have. Could have got an A6400, but for some reason it doesn't have inbuilt image stabilisation which I now consider essential. (Better still when combined with a lens that also has inbuilt image stabilisation).
I would have liked the newer A7IV as it has bird eye tracking autofocus, but couldn't justify an extra $1k just for that. As it is my wallet is still in recovery mode from the A7III body purchase! I've seen pics of birds in thick bush taken using the bird eye tracking & they have been pin sharp. Only way I can achieve that is using manual focus, & this relies on the bird staying still for long enough for me to adjust the focus, which, especially with the big Sigma can take a while.
The Sigma is the only full frame lens I have, & to be honest whilst it does the job, I am finding it to be a bit too heavy & bulky. Pointing it at a bird, all too often the shot I want is just after I've lowered the camera because my arms are aching! MrsTea has told me I can buy the Sony Gmaster 100-400 zoom lens with a x1.4 Sony teleconverter. This will give me 540mm so not too far off the Sigma, & quite a bit lighter (Also a lot more expensive! ), but I think it'll have to wait until we are back in Vic next year. For now I have to get used to the Sigma only giving me 600mm. (On a crop frame camera it gave me 900mm).
How are you finding your Sigma?
mudnut
27th June 2022, 07:09 PM
Glad to read your lenses are Ok. The Sigma is far too heavy, to be honest. I can only get a couple shots off when holding the camera, especially above chest height. It also has the annoying ability to go out of focus at exactly the wrong moment. But it can also give me some fantastic results when used in conjunction with a tripod.
Cuppa
27th June 2022, 07:51 PM
It also has the annoying ability to go out of focus at exactly the wrong moment.
I've found that sometimes too, usually because I've been at a distance from the subject which might change a little & take me from one distance range on the lens to another. Also using autofocus is tricky because the focal length multiplies any movement causing focus to change. I've found using the continuous autofocus (AF-C) helps a bit, but at the longer focal lengths the lens struggles to keep up with the camera. It is still a good lens for the price & as you say capable of great images, so nothing wrong with the glass. Just a beast of a lens!

I see no havoc spread personally, any chance multiple government departments surrounding us could help keep say Easy Peasy Blackberries at bay [emoji120][emoji120][emoji23]

We've got a local volunteer group that get access to areas affected by Pitto, buckthorn and other pest plants. Mostly retired gents, but they certainly do a bloody good job.
Gotta get the local officer onto Ivy though. That stuff is just plain wrong!!

I see on the telly he’s back again muddy? Is it unusual that he’s back only 5 months after his last visit? Maybe they do 2 round trips a year from the great southern continent. Better dust off the Nikon mate and post an update!

Not quite sure what his deal is, Plassy. The Southern Elephant seal has a huge distribution range. He might just be lost and heads back here.
