Hey guys, I have pulled the cylinder head off the old tb42 Gq due to a crappy head gasket, and she is definitely due for a new set of valves. My question is what should I be expecting to pay to basically have the head recod? such as crack tested, shaved and have new valves put through it.
What I was hoping for was to pull the head off, have it shaved and tested and simply replace the head gasket, but it didn't turn out as planned =(
I'm from Melbourne, Aus so if anyone around my area has some prices that would be even better!
Cheers lads!

cant remember what the head guy charged but theink overall it was about 12-1500 doing the labour myself last time, make sure you find exactly why the gasket has failed or it WILL fail again in the same way down the track

I totally agree, I once bought a car that had blow one engine due to overheating, then when it overheated a second time the owner sold it for wrecking. Turned out it had a seized radiator cap relief valve!

Also pay close attention the rear of the block.
water and oil galleries next to one another, very very close to one another.
just something I noticed when I replaced my gasket.
The said oil gallery was leaking "care of" the old head gasket externally, thankfully that was all it was doing.

That sounds like twice the price of RB30 head.
Why is that more expensive mate?

because im fussy, genuine gasket was over $200 alone, then new bolts x26, intake and exhaust gaskets, oils x2 to flush out any contaminants, coolant, then getting the head checked/machined etc. it adds up quickly once you put it all together
and from expierence dont use anything except a genuine nissan head gasket

I fitted the $60 head gasket from Burson(now $30). That was over four and half years ago.
Looks like I've been bit lucky. :)
Head bolts were the old ones. Coolant was brand new(the best stuff) with distilled water(I'm fussy with coolant after seeing so much
corrosion inside the engine block, head and thermostat housing).
I sometime reuse old exhaust gaskets with high temp sealant.
The fully reconditioned head was around $600 with new valves, new seats, new stem seals, etc etc, but I went for a quick half recondition job 'cos I was in hurry during x'mas time.
It's still going 'good'(kinda).
Next "head job" will be a proper complete one. But, that will also be a bottom end rebuild as well.

I think they were only prone to head issues when they've had LPG put through them. Either way, I agree with you, may as well do it right and do it strong.

On that, I'm pretty sure RB30 goes head to head. Mine probably lasted this long with the half arsed head job 'cos I don't grunt and rev the engine that much or take it on pretty rugged hilly off road treks.(not upto it anyway with naturally aspirated carby engine).
My previous head gasket/head failure was purely from corrosion due to poorly maintained coolant system by the previous bloke. I'm pretty religious with my coolant system maintenance, but nothing much I can do about the existing damage and stubborn rust deposits until I use a chemical flush, which I'm still bit reluctant to go for.

theres a design flaw right at the back of the tb42 head/block the rear most cooling passage is too close to the cylinder and over time it corrodes a bit getting so close to the bore that theres stuff all gasket material left to seal between the two, just the steel fire ring of the gasket and about 1mm of the actual composite gasket material, if you just replace the gasket it will fail again in about 6 months. the long term fix is to weld the offending passages in the head and epoxy the ones in the block. since doing this mod ive done about 100k kms while shoving about 10psi down its throat unintercooled with no gasket issues and im not gentle on it
