View Full Version : Looking for some help with a few questions

Today I fitted my catch can to my 2013 Y61 ZD30, and while I was under the bonnet I thought I'd take some photos and ask a few questions.

When I was fitting the catch can, this thing got in the way, it's the ting with 37K on it. What is it?

There's a hose coming out of that thing and going into another thing above in that pic, this thing:

What's that & what does it do???

While I had that plastic cover off the top of the motor, I noticed all this oil oozing around this hose:

I'm guessing that's from NOT having a catch can????

I hope it's from not having a catch can, otherwise I reckon I've got something to worry about.

I would say you have a leaky Intercooler, and yes all that oil is from not having a catch can.
You can remove the IC and clean it then pressure test it.
Those spare plug ends you'll find heaps all over the place they are for different spec models

Ok photo one is a vac canister.
It's basically a resivour but for vacume pressure for things like the brake and clutch boosters..
The later models don't have them fitted anymore..
The solinode looking thing I'm not 100% sure of. Do you have a factory rear diff lock?

And the oil leak.. where there is oil there is boost leaks. Tighten the hose clamps..

Yes the catch can will greatly reduce the amount of oil going threw the system..

I/C removal takes maybe 20 minutes the first time you do it then maybe 5 minutes once you have it sorted

Your intercooler isn't leaking all that much from the pics.
Intercooler leaks will have that brown/black crud but will be where the Intercooler Core attachs to the Tanks.

That leak on the pipes just needs tighter/better clamps.

The VNT will be very forgiving for boost leaks anyway.
All that happens with small leaks is the ECU will control the Turbo vanes to keep increasing pitch until the ECU boost demand is met.
That happens in like 10ths of a second
It takes quite substantial leak to max out the Turbo Vanes so that you can't get max boost

Once cleaned you can tape up one end and using a bike pump introduce some pressure
to the IC via the other end thats taped as well, submerge in some water, make sure its dry
before reinstalling.
Use any type of solvent to clean but make sure its dry eh
Once the engine cover is off there are some hose clamps and the bolts themselves
holding the IC in place, not a hard job at all, in fact one of the easier jobs.
Just take your time if you get stuck ask here and someone will help you out

EDIT whats been leaking has been leaking over the life of the vehicle so far

Thank you for the help. Yes I do have a factory rear locker. Is that the solenoid for that, that's i've read about. That apparently is the weak point in the locker.

Unsure..
Best way to find out is to trace the vac line from the rear diff to the engine bay and see where it ends

So the oil, shows me where boost can be leaking from, I reckon that's correct, is it?

And we don't want oil, that's now supposed to go into the catch can right??

So if I get rid of the oil and tighten/replace those clamps, I should be much better off.

Is that all correct???

Sorry if I sound a bit dumb, but as I say to others, it's dumber not to ask.

Yes... to all except the dumb bit.
You have a new 'toy' it will take a while to suss out all its little pecadilloes so not dumb at all

Yep all correct mate..
As ET said thought leaks don't really matter to much with vnt turbo as it can push more threw.
It's more a mess than anything..

Thanks for the help guys, it's much appreciated.

Went for the first 'real' drive today after fitting the catch can. It seems to have made the turbo alot easier to hear, I'm guessing it's the turbo. I now have a tone in the cabin like you get from the radio when something electrical interferes with the reception, but it's not the radio as the tone remains when I turn the radio off.

Luckily it's not really annoying.

The Patrol uses the most oil out of all the cars I've ever owned I reckon, I'm expecting to have something in the catch can by the end of the week.

Not sure what the 'tone' could be but a word to the wise about oil levels if you don't already know.

Don't be tempted to add a bit extra oil to make up for the burn off.
ZD30's don't like oil above the 'max' limit and it is a specific warning in the Workshop Manuals etc as overfilling the the oil quantity may damage the Turbo
