Hi all

I have a 1998 2.8l turbo diesel patrol. Whenever I use the patrol in 4x4 mode hi/lo there is a loud clunking sound. I've taken it to the mechanics and they replaced my right hand side hub, but it still makes the same loud clunking sound,I also manually lock the hubs but same noise. I was told it's the auto locking hubs and to replace them to manual. Should I replace the left hand side hubs before switching to manual hubs? Or could it be another problem?

Are you coming to a dead stop before changing from hi/lo or lo/hi
with your foot on the clutch ?

yes whenever I change to Hi/Lo I fully stop the vehicle, even thou it states when changing from 2WD to 4WD hi minimum of 40kms. But I stop before I do.

If your locking the hubs yet it's still clunking it's not the hubs..
Sure the autos are weak when in auto mode but when locked they are locked, as strong as a manual hub..
Imo if I know I'm going into 4wd the hubs are locked..

Any perticular senerio that the clunk happens?
And is it once off or happens often in 4wd?

it happens often, even when on hard surface when I tested it in 4WD hi or Lo.

Auto hubs will click more than clunk.

Could it be a suspension component moving? Is the car going over bumps or threw holes when it happens?

Does the noise happen if you lock the hubs but leave it in 2wd?

1. Find a different Mechanic
2. Check the hubs aren't packed solid with grease
3. I agree with BGW and JC... loud Clunks are usually either sitting in the Pax seat, the CV joints or chewed out bushes
