Hi guys

So my alternator has gone kerfuct on my 4.8 and I'm have real trouble finding someone who can repair it or finding an affordable replacement :-(

I guess it doesn't help that I have the only 4.8 in the UK (as far as I know!). Nissan UK have quoted close to AU$2000 and want 6-8 weeks for delivery!

Most places in Aus that have them advertised won't ship to the Uk so I'm kinda stuck.

The part numbers I have are Nissan 23100-VC200 or Hitachi HAL-1110718B. I've also seen an alternate Nissan number of 23100-VD70A. Does anyone know if these parts are interchangeable/will fit my 2003? What's the difference?

Any suggestions as to sourcing an affordable one or others that will fit?

Thanks

Nick, desperate, UK!

G'day Nick,

I'm assuming you've tried the vendors on here? If not, Patrolapart (pretty sure they ship internationally) http://patrolapart.com.au/product/genuine-nissan-patrol-alternator-gu-tb48-hitachi-made-in-japan/genuine-nissan-patrol-alternator-gu-tb48-hitachi-made-in-japan

or this one is quite cheap and ships worldwide, but don't know what sort of quality http://www.ozautoelectrics.com/nissan-patrol-gu-tb48-alternator.html

Cheers,
Darren

Thanks guys. I ordered from ozautoelectrics as they could ship a new one for less than half the price of patrolapart. I'll let you know how I get on!

Incidentally, do you guys get them repaired over there? Apparently my old one needs a new rotor which just isn't available over here, but I'm wondering if you have more luck over there? I'd be keen to get it repaired and keep as a spare, even if it means shipping to Aus and back?

Thanks again

Nick

I'm sure I've heard of people getting them repaired but not sure where, maybe Deerings or the like.

I would say that depends on kinda damage/wear on the rotor. If it's rewinding the coils, I think it can be done.
Replacing slip rings and bearings are usual things auto sparkies do.
I would say the internal coil damage is pretty rare.
What exactly is wrong with the rotor?

Please let us know how the cheaper alternator goes. When mine died last year, I was told by a couple of auto elecs, that there is a definite difference in quality between the alternators that they and Patrolapart supply and the online cheapies.

I think there's a simple rule to remember there. If something is unusually cheaper, nine out of ten times there's a very good reason for that. What matters is whether the el cheapo is still worth it. I find the el cheapos are worth at sometimes, considering I don't expect the vehicle to outlive me(even though it's quite likely). :). Other times it's a calculated risk. One thing is certain though. If you're travelling in the outback and put el cheapos, just make sure to have another spare el cheapo(if not a good one) in the back of the car.
I put a used EL Falcon alternator in mine as an upgrade, but I"m still carrying the stock one in the car all the time, outback travelling or not.
El cheapos are worth sometime(they do save you money), and sometime they are not. Key is taking a calculated risk, not just a risk on it's own.

My 'Plan A' was to get an el cheapo so I could be up and running quickly whilst finding somewhere to repair the original. That way I'd have a backup. The English countryside is nothing like the outback so not to concerned there! :-)

However, I'm still waiting for the alternator, despite ordering last Thursday and paying a big lump to get it on a 2 working day service. Australia Post tracking is next to useless and as yet Ozautoelectrics haven't responded to my email requesting more information as to its whereabouts. Not a good start. Mind you it still beats Nissan Uk's quoted 6-8 weeks delivery.... So far!

As it seems I now can't get the original repaired, if anyone comes across a 'spare' from a breakers etc, please let me know.

I'll update you if/when I get it!

Nick

I don't know. All they said was it needs a new rotor. The shop I sent it to are pretty good and well thought of. They originally said up front that they wouldn't be able to get parts, but from my description of the problem they thought it sounded like brushes, which they can manufacture. Unfortunately they said it's the rotor that needs replacing and can't get the parts. I did find another place that could rewind the rotor but they quoted me around au$700!

Well just a quick update for those interested...

The alternator turned up after a week, despite paying a fair bit extra for 2 day service. But it was damaged - the main post was bent and the insulator was broken! I've now lost all faith in Ozautoelectricals as they've not responded to any of the emails I've sent them. Time for a paypal claim and the search continues me thinks...
