View Full Version : Water and sediment in petrol.

With all of the cold weather and rain, I am reminded of the time my mate's HQ copped a drink of water and sediment. The tank at the servo he bought the fuel from had been flooded the previous night and the owner had no idea. As a side note, he never took responsibility for selling the contaminated fuel, either.

The HQ suffered so many fuel-related problems after the dose of crook fuel, my mate cracked it and sold the car.

My Corolla also used to suffer from water in the fuel as it used to sit around for weeks at a time. It would miss and carry on, so I would have to give it a cup full of metho occasionally. After that it would run sweet for another few months.

With the cold and long storage times in more remote areas, condensation in the petrol could start being a problem.

Out of curiosity, I have searched for a petrol water detection kit, but have only found diesel ones. Has anyone fitted a kit to a petrol system?

Hey mate, what's the go with this? How much metho per fuel do you put in? Safe for carby motors (my carby rb30)? Also, once you put it in, do you have to go through the tank straight away or can it sit?

My rig isn't a daily, just a weekender, but since I've had a young fella haven't been able to head out as often as I used to.

I just carried a bottle of metho, and would pour in a bit, according to how much fuel was in the tank. I never put in more than a small cupful in a full tank though.

I haven't had to do it to to the Old Trol as the problem hasn't surfaced yet, but I haven't been driving it much, lately and haven't had to fill up for a month or more at a time.

The metho mixes with the water and allows the engine to burn it. I have read, a long time ago, that alcohol can affect some plastics used in fuel pumps and senders in some brands of vehicles.

Yes, that's true. Some of the plastics used it fuel pumps and fuel lines do suffer from alcohol, even though they are pretty petrol resistant.

I'm bit uncertain about using methanol(or ethanol) in petrol vehicles.
Apparently water injection works by improving the energy output of the combustion, so the water in methanol(or ethanol) may not be that bad in theory.
But, I'm bit skeptical about the practical outcomes of having methanol or ethanol in petrol(for long term).

Once off application like the above for the specific benefit is a different thing, of course.

Dom, he is talking about Methylated Spirits - not Methanol

in the old days, I used to put 100ml of metho per tank of fuel, every week

then I started to forget.................. then I couldn't be bothered any more

never hurt it, maybe even helped with the moisture in the tank from hot hot days in Perth

Yeah mate. I meant meth(methylated spirits) has methanol and ethanol mixture in it. More of the latter for safety reasons, I think. I thought it's a 50/50 mixture, but apparently not. Only very small percentage of methanol in it, comparing to ethanol.

Can the ethanol petrol(10% stuff) be ok for the engine on long term?
I'm bit skeptical. Extra water it produces can't be good, can it?

Worth a good conversation, but off topic here for sure.
